PERSONS OF IMPACT AUCTION

Dear LWVLGA Members,

This is a reminder that we are soliciting donations for the "Chance Auction" that will be held in conjunction with the Persons of Impact Award evening on September 18th at Mayslake Peabody Estate.

A couple of points and clarifications to make include the following:

1. Two or more people can put together a "basket". We are using the term "basket" loosely.  It can be a container of any kind as long as it is attractive. We are asking that these be wrapped in cellophane and tied with a ribbon if at all possible. If someone can't do this we will do it. Please provide a list of the contents of the container either on a separate piece of paper or on the "Sponsorship" form. If you would like to be acknowledged in the program book you must submit a sponsorship form.

2. Gift certificates can be included in the "baskets" or can be submitted for the auction as stand alone donations, especially if they are substantial($25.00 or more). Certificates for amount less than this will be included in a "basket".

3. Please submit a sponsorship donation form by AUGUST 31st for either your donation or for that of an outside business if you want your self or the donating business to be acknowledged in the program book. You do not have to have the "basket" or certificate  ready for delivery or pick-up until SEPTEMBER 12th.

4. Either deliver the donations to Janice Miller at 414 N. Grant St., Hinsdale or call for a pickup by either Janice Miller or Barb Yong.

5. Copies of the letter to businesses, the letter to league members and the sponsorship form are being included in the membership renewal packet that was mailed on August 23rd.

If you have any questions, please call Janice Miller at 630-920-8763 or Barb Yong at 312-696-2034.

Please help us make this the best auction ever!!!!

LWVIL CHARTER SCHOOL STUDY PANEL DISCUSSION

Please join other leaguers in Oak Park for a panel discussion of issues in the League of Women Voters of Illinois Charter School Position Update: accountability, transparency and funding.

When:

Wednesday, September 10
7-8:30 p.m.

Where:

Oak Park Public Library
834 Lake Street, Oak Park

Who:

  • Dr. Marvin Hoffman, University of Chicago, who started the Kenwood/Oakland Charter School
  • Andrew Broy, President of the Illinois Network of Charter Schools
  • Kurt Hilgendorf, Researcher for the Chicago Teachers Union
  • Dr. Gary Miron, Western Michigan University, who studies for-profit and nonprofit charter management organizations

Do you support charter schools?  While there are only a few now in the suburbs of Cook County, in Chicago they are a major force in education.  The League of Women Voters of Illinois is reviewing our current position on charter schools to see if it is correct for today's environment.  We will be asked to vote on a new position in January of 2015.   To prepare for this, the LaGrange Area League has formed a study group on charter schools.    We will be having a membership  meeting in November to review some of the current information on charter schools and their effect on the education system.

What can you do? Inform yourself by reading  the information available on the State League website.  http://www.lwvil.org/charter-schools.html.  All materials relevant to the study can be found there. Please join our study group by getting in touch with Kathi Graffam at graff5@aol.com.
