.

WASHINGTON, D.C.
Students in the Washington, D.C. Youth Job Readiness & Placement Program visited the mayors office and City Hall to learn about civil service jobs as part of a weekly behind-the-scenes tour of local employers initiative.

The students who participate in the program have experienced noticeable improvement in their behavior, social interactions and overall perspective on their future potential.

CHARLOTTE, NC
Ricka Forney is a student in the Inspire Youth program in Charlotte, North Carolina where she successfully competed against several other students who pitched their personal business plans to a panel of experienced entrepreneurs in the annual Sink or Swim Business Plan Competition.

Ricka won a $500 grant and will utilize the money to purchase business cards, flyers and technical equipment for her business, 'Moves by Ricka', which teaches dance classes for youth with special needs.

BRISTOL, PA
Akirah Underwood is recent graduate of the Bucks County Youth Center GED program who made the decision to turn her life around in February of this year. Now, she is a full-time college student and a part-time worker with aspirations of becoming a medical assistant in a pediatric office in the near future.

Akirah regularly returns to the youth center, where she volunteers in the Second Time Around Store.

"Working here has caused me to view my situation differently," she says. "I now have a better outlook on life."

Survey Says Image
What You
Told Us

A third of workforce professionals who responded to the Oct. 24 Pulse of the Workforce Survey said they were forced to reduce the workforce services they provide to the public as a result of the government shutdown.

Other workforce professionals indicated that the shutdown forced them to lay off staff. However, none reported a need to temporarily close their career or youth services centers as a result.

See below for the full results of the survey, "How did the recent federal government shutdown impact your workforce development initiatives?"

Forced to close career centers & youth service centers = 0%

Forced to layoff staff = 25%

Forced to reduce workforce services provided to the public = 33%

It did not impact my workforce development initiatives = 25%

Other = 17%

The National Association of Workforce Development Professionals is conducting a more comprehensive survey of workforce professionals on the impact of the 16-day government shutdown.
