Polk Co. staff pose with Florida Governor,
Rick Scott, at the Race to Place celebration

After establishing a bold public goal to assist 10,000 Polk County residents in securing employment this year, the staff of the Polk Works career centers in central Florida joined 750 of its community partners in celebrating the success of its Race to Place initiative.

Between January and June of this year, a large network of business, non-profit and community partners helped 10,488 Polk County residents find a job, which accounted for approximately 14% of the state's population of newly-employed workers during that time.

ResCare workforce staff members Ethel Easterly and Jennie Santos were two of the Race to Place leaders who Florida Governor, Rick Scott, recognized  during the community celebration for their part in the following achievements:

  • 93.5% of adults who were unemployed upon registering at the One-Stop locations were employed when they lef
  • 94.9% of in-school youth who set out to achieve a credential, diploma, acceptance into secondary education, advanced training, employment, or military enlistment, achieved their positive outcome

5 Tips for Job Seekers with Disabilities

According to the Department of Labor, Americans with disabilities comprise 20.9% of the nation's labor force and have an unemployment rate twice as high as people without disabilities.

In honor of the final days of the National Disability Employment Awareness Month, here are five tips to to help job seekers with disabilities find meaningful work.

  • Spend time researching what type of jobs best match your abilities.  Randomly applying for jobs may prove to be a slow, frustrating process. However, a more targeted approach is likely to lead to better results.
  • Access the services offered at local organizations that assist individuals with disabilities.  In most cases, these organizations will have information about available jobs and should be able to help job seekers determine their level of employability
  • Remember that a job interview is an opportunity to discuss your abilities; not your disability.  Don't make your potential employer guess if you have the skills necessary to perform a job.  Use your job interview to help them become comfortable with your qualifications.
  •  If you need special accommodations during a job interview, let your potential employer know well in advance of your scheduled appointment.
  • If you do not have a visible or obvious disability, you have the choice of when and if you should disclose it to your employer. Even if you do require a reasonable accommodation on the job, you do not need to disclose your need for it until after you have been offered a job.
