Americans Are Quitting Their Jobs
at Highest Rate Since 2008

American workers are quitting their jobs at a pace that now surpasses the pre-2009 recession rate - serving as a notable sign that the economy could be progressing towards a healthy rebound.

According to the recently released Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2.16 million people quit their jobs in 2012, which represents 53 percent of all job separations including quits, layoffs, discharges and retirees.

The report is an indication that American workers are now more confident they can find better job opportunities than the ones they have.

The graph below, published by the Gluskin Sheff Research, is an indication that workers feel better about finding employment elsewhere but it doesn't take into account the disparity between the growing amount of American job openings and the reduced number of qualified employees to fill those vacancies, according to the BLS.

Tips for Active Job Seekers

  Hire Me Image

It's often said that it is easier to get a job when you have a job.  Although that may be true, career coach John M. O'Connor says it is best to manage your search for a new job with caution when you are still employed.

Unfortunately, many employed jobseekers often make at least one of five common mistakes that have the potential to tarnish their reputations with future employers, according to O'Connor.  Those mistakes are:

  1. Using your work email address to interact with potential employers
  2. Using your work telephone to communicate with recruiters
  3. Underperforming on the job to focus on your search
  4. Being indiscreet in communicating details about your search
  5. Assuming your online search will go unnoticed by your current employer

If circumstances require you to search for a new job while you're still employed, be sure to manage your professional reputation by avoiding these five common pitfalls.
