Produce
The Williamsburg Farmers Market is happy to introduce our new vendor, Herb Aqua Farm!

HerbAqua Farm is a family aquaponics farm located in Smithfield Virginia. Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics to produce food. In our system tilapia fish produce natural fertilizer to grow food in a soil-less sustainable system. The naturally occurring bacteria break down the fish effluent into usable nitrogen and minerals for crops. The crops receive all the water and nutrients they need to produce in an accelerated environment. This system is the only form of agriculture which produces a protein crop (tilapia fish) and vegetable crops all in the same system.

Leafy green vegetables are grown in the aquaponic system and fruiting crops are grown in the soil using the same fertilizer source. The discharged water (after going through a mini water treatment system process) is drip irrigated into the field adjacent to the greenhouse.

The greenhouse and fish water is heated using a wood fired hot water boiler, which is green energy because the wood is a renewable resource. We use NO herbicides and pesticides in the aquaponic system as it adversely affects the fish. This naturally e-coli free system is mimicking the natural relationship between the fish, water, and plants that occur daily in waterways around the world.
