A Note from Libbey

I am stepping down as market manager as of June 29. However, You can expect to see me at the market as a customer who will have the time to sit for awhile to listen to the musicians, to accompany my husband as he makes his shopping rounds and maybe meet friends for breakfast in Merchants Square.

I have watched all of you for eleven years as you have made the market the start of your Saturdays. Now I will join you for this Saturday morning gathering, I can't think of a better way to keep in touch and get the best food and plants.

There will never a perfect moment to retire from a job that grew from a "part-time" job into a passion filled with fascinating, hard working farmers, bakers, watermen, and chefs. I have been blessed with volunteers and customers that I count as friends. There was never a dull moment!

With my background in horticulture you can guess that much of my retirement time will be spent in our garden tending to many of the plants I bought at the market.

My assistant, Tracy Herner, will oversee the market until the new manager is selected, the volunteers will continue to contribute their talents and the board will keep the market on track. And best of all you can count on another year of products being brought to you by your favorite vendors.

I look forward to seeing you at the market as it enters its twelfth season, and for many years to come.   Thank you for your support as we have grown the Williamsburg Farmers Market together.

With warm regards

Libbey, Market Manager

Make Half Of Your Plate Fruits & Veggies

 My Plate

The best advice is to eat at least 3 cups of fruits and vegetables each day.  In order to get an idea of what counts as a cup of raw vegetables click here.

Fresh produce at this season tempts us with color, but the flavor and nutrition  are  the real rewards.

Buying at farmers markets has become a weekly outing for many Americans. Recognizing this fact, Vegetarian Times has devoted an entire issue to being a Farmers Market Cookbook with lots of tips about markets along with recipes for the summer.

Allium - Garlic - Onion - Leek
Alliums
Elephant garlic up

These are all related and can be found from bud (scape), to flower to bulb, all around the market.  Tip: The flowers can be sprinkled in salads.
Sugar Hill
Sugar Hill Botanicals
brings buckets of cut alliums to the market at this season.  They grow most of their plants to dry to use in the decorations also seen at their stand.
