Thoughts from Dr. Shah
We have been taught for so long that it is the size of the particle of cholesterol that is the most important thing in determining our risk of heart disease, but that is not true. Rather, we need to be concerned about the particle NUMBER.
What does this mean exactly? Think about it this way...
There is a Seahawks game and 100 people need to get there. In the first scenario, each person rents a huge tour bus and they all leave for the game at the same time. So there are 100 buses driving down !-5 at the same time, clogging the road and slowing everyone down, causing accidents and traffic and horrible pollution! This is the way we look at cholesterol right now...we are paying attention to the size of the vehicle. In this scenario the bus is huge and good because we want our particles to be large....but we are missing the point because even though they are large, they are crowding the road.
In the second scenario the same 100 people are going to the game, but this time 50 people each rent a tour bus. So, there are only 2 tour buses going to the game which is relatively problem free. Everyone can travel to the game and there are no accidents or quite as much pollution. This is the way we should be looking at cholesterol...are the large particles carrying enough cholesterol so that we don't have to have so many on the road?
2 patients can have an LDL or "bad cholesterol" of 100 (50 passengers) but one person can have 50 buses and one can have 2 buses. Their LDL will look the same to their Dr. in our traditional testing. Using the NMR Lipoprofile Test we can look more deeply at risk and combine this lipid information with detection of 6 different inflammatory factors that identify those patients with residual risk that traditional testing misses. This is covered by insurance and NO MATTER WHAT will only cost you 75 dollars. The company has a promise that if insurance doesn't cover the rest that you will only be charged this flat fee.
If you are one of our patients that has had a cardiovascular event in the past, has been on a statin, has a history of genetically high cholesterol or are just interested in understanding your heart risk more deeply, you are the perfect candidate to this test. Let us know if you are interested!

Nutrition With Hannah
"Eat Food. Not Too much. Mostly Plants." -- Michael Pollan, renowned food expert and journalist, 2007
I love this quote by Michael Pollan and thought it was a good fit for this month. He is saying that mostly plants and green foods feed our heart energy, so really increase your leafy greens this month and try some green smoothies by simply adding kale or spinach to your protein shake in the morning.
Here is a list of all controllable factors for heart disease- each one of these factors can be changed by diet and or lifestyle and many can be measured in the blood:
- Smoking and too much alcohol
- Low HDL cholesterol, High LDL cholesterol and high particle number
- Uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Physical inactivity
- Obesity (more than 20% over ideal body weight)
- Waist circumference over 40" for men and 35 inches for women
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- High C-reactive protein (inflammation marker)
- High Homocysteine
- Uncontrolled stress and anger
- Vitamin deficiencies
My best food advice is to eat mostly a Mediterranean diet with an addition of tons of anti-inflammatory spices. Your best foods include fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, olive oil, avocados, legumes, grass fed meats, free-range eggs, turmeric, cayenne, garlic and green tea. Also, gradually decrease your carbs and take out as much processed sugar as possible. Eating too much sugar and starch wreaks havoc on your blood stream, increasing hormones that lead to fat gain, silent inflammation, insulin resistance, high blood pressure and ultimately diabetes and heart disease.
Spice it up! Use the Pharmacy in your kitchen!
*Turmeric- potent anti-inflammatory, improves C-reactive protein
*Ginger- anti-inflammatory, digestive aid, improves circulation
*Cayenne- anti-inflammatory, improves circulation, neutralizes acidity
*Garlic- reduces blood clots, improves circulation, enhances detoxification

Winter blues got you down? Recovering from a cold or flu? Any stress in your life? Chronic illness? Don't know what's wrong but you just don't feel right? One of our IV SOLUTIONS may help.
WHY DO WE GET SICK IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Typically, the degeneration of health begins with sub optimal nutrition. Tissues in the digestive tract usually break down first if nutritional building blocks are lacking. Ultimately over time, this can lead to "leaky gut" - where molecules including yeast, bacteria, viruses and incompletely digested food particles enter the body. Ultimately, this may lead to lowered enzymes in the small intestine, pancreas, and stomach. We soon develop digestive difficulties and nutrient deficiencies.
Since 70% of our immune system is located within the intestines, we can understand how a "leaky gut" can allow foreign substances to attack the body. Up-regulated, or auto-immune condition refers to a body that attacks itself. We see this in diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.
We live in a culture where fast food abounds, chemicals are around every corner, and stress is a common word in most people's vocabulary. Conventional medicine treats symptoms with drugs, many of which may create more nutritional deficiencies. Many in the population are mineral deficient, particularly in magnesium, and low in vitamins such as the B vitamins, vitamin C and D. Couple that with complaints of chronic fatigue, adrenal stress, undiagnosed latent viruses, many wonder how to get through another day!
Sometimes trying to take more nutrients orally is fruitless because the digestive system by this time, is overstressed and has lost its capacity to absorb nutrients adequately.
WHY DO I NEED IV SOLUTIONS?
Good question! IV Therapy delivers nutrients safely and quickly to the cells - where they belong - without taxing the digestive system. Other benefits include increased energy, improved immune status, ability to get high doses of nutrients to the cells immediately, to fight acute infections, like the flu, and chronic infections such as lyme disease, yeast infections, chronic sinusitis, and hepatitis.
HERE IS A LIST OF WHAT WE OFFER
Myers Cocktail
This 20 minute IV push is full of B vitamins, minerals and Vitamin C. It supports the immune system and provides energy. Perfect for building up your strength, preventing or recovering from illness, or for those who are mineral deficient. Excellent for those who are short on time.
Vitamin C Immune Drip
Higher doses of Vitamin C support acute or chronic infectious conditions such as influenza, hepatitis, and the common cold. It can help with allergies, and heavy metal detoxification
Hydrogen Peroxide
This IV oxygenates the body while killing viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Great for influenza, sinus infections, systemic candida. Increases energy quickly and provides a sense of well being.
Glutathione IV
This antioxidant supports liver detoxification. It is used in chronic infection, stress, Parkinson's Disease, and macular degeneration.
Alpha Lipoic Acid IV
A potent free radical scavenger, this IV helps with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, MS and liver disease.
Multivitamin and Mineral IV
Comprehensive nutrient support that may also include Licorice Root and Germanium. Can help with stress, immune support, fatigue, and chronic illness.

Thoughts from Dr. Abbott
To diverge from heart health a bit, many of my patients have been asking me about vaccinations lately so I will take this opportunity to comment. And please click on the below link to read my blog on the topic!
My patients often ask me, do I "believe" in vaccinations?
My answer is this: I believe in them as much as I believe in pharmaceuticals, herbs, or supplements. There is a time and place for everything and I don't believe in giving a blanket statement that a preventative treatment is always good (or bad) for all people. I provide patient-centered care, and that means my recommendations are always tailored to what makes sense for you, your health, and your values.
The keys to making the "right" choice are simple: get educated on your options, make the choice that feels right to you. There is a lot to know about immunizations, and for some people the decision can be overwhelming. I'm here to help you with the education part, including sorting through the piles of information (and misinformation). Once we've covered the basics and answered your questions, we'll blend my medical advice with your personal preferences to come to a decision together that you can feel good about.

I also recommend The Vaccine Book by Dr. Robert Sears.
