is now known as...
Shah Integrative Medicine

What's In a Name?

Why change the name of my business? To commemorate the official ending of my non-compete with Longevity Medical Clinic, I would like to better represent what I do in the name of my practice. Truly the essence of the medicine I practice is integrative. I pull the best from conventional, naturopathic, homeopathic and ayurvedic to serve each person where they are.

Additionally, I am now able to advertise my overwhelming specialty which is bio-identical hormone replacement and anti-aging medicine. Will I still offer a general family practice? Of course! But I am now owning my specialty and marketing as such.

Now Offering Healthy Aging Medicine!

The buzzword "anti-aging" really devalues the beauty of growing older. Aging has many wonderful benefits: more time for yourself, finding new passions unencumbered by other's plans for you, imparting wisdom built from years of experience, freedom from a monthly menstrual period, among many other things.

But adding to our wisdom, power, freedom and life experience does not also mean we should gracefully accept hot flashes, depression, urinary incontinence, decreased sexual desire, heart disease, diabetes and thyroid imbalance. It should not mean that we have to live with dry, wrinkly skin, lackluster hair, fragile nails and weak muscles. We can optimize our aging experience to have more of the good stuff and less (or none) of the bad by using impeccable nutrition, supplementation, and hormone balancing.  Physicians tell their patients every day that they should "just live with it because that is what happens when you get older." You deserve to enter your better years feeling better than you ever have.

Taking a full history, obtaining the proper labs, doing targeted physical exam and understanding your unique nutritional requirements allow me to put together a optimal aging plan that includes supplementation, medication changes, bio-identical hormone replacement, and exercise and nutrition advice; a plan that is completely individualized to your unique needs.

Aging doesn't have to be uncomfortable!

Brisdelle Okayed as First Non-hormonal Rx for Hot Flashes

What does this mean for your options?

Most of us want options when dealing with what most deem the most awful symptoms of menopause, which is hot flashes. Many don't want to be on hormonal therapy, even if it is bio-identical and kept in a safe and effective range. This is completely okay and as any of my patients will tell you, there is no judgement in my office. My goal is to provide YOU with OPTIONS and INFORMATION so you can make the best choice for yourself.

But is this new drug Brisdelle the answer? Brisdelle's active ingredient is paroxetine, which is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor found in the drugs Paxil and Pexeva, which are two medications used for depression and psychiatric disorder. The levels of paroxetine in these drugs is lower than in Brisdelle.

An FDA Advisory committee warned against approving Brisdelle because paroxetine carries with it a risk of suicide ideation and osteoporosis. But the FDA put it through anyway. They stated in the news release that paroxetine mesylate proved safe and effective in 2 clinical trials involving 1175 postmenopausal women with moderate to severe hot flashes. Headache, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting were the most common adverse events observed in patients. The feeling is that there is not much we can do aside from hormone therapy to help people with hot flashes so there needs to be an alternative, and the benefits outweigh the risks.

However, another alternative to hormonal therapy is herbal treatments for hot flashes. These carry with them no side effects that we are aware of and can very often reduce or eliminate this troublesome symptom in many women with mild to moderate hot flashes. "When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all of your thoughts break their bonds, your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction and you find yourself in a new great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be."
