Hello BASIS Tucson North Families,

We hope that your summer has been fantastic so far!

Now available under Quick Links...  the 2012-2013 Bell Schedule, the 2012-2013 Calendar, Carpool sign-up, Athletics physical form.

In this month's newsletter you will find information to help your family prepare for the coming 2012-2013 school year. School starts on Thursday, August 9th.

The first day of school will be Early Release. Classes start at 7:45am (Lower School) or 8:30am (Upper School) and ALL CLASSES end at 1:00pm.
We will not have a lunch period on the first day of school.

We will send home parking lot rules and procedures to help this process go smoothly.
We highly recommend that families carpool as much as possible. The link to sign-up is available in Quick Links.

Teachers will give students a supply list on the first day of school, but I will have a general list for students at Student check-in and Schedule Pick-up.
Please read the note from Mrs. Elder about the type of backpack we recommend.

Student
Check-in and Schedule Pick-up dates are tentatively set for the first week in August and the days leading up to the first day of school.

Also in the newsletter, June's edition of Meet the Tucson North Staff. This month features Mrs. Wohlford, the Tucson North Middle School Director.

Last but not least, I have included a section with the Sports offered by season. You can download the physical forms from there also.

If you have any questions or need to meet with us, please contact us at our temporary office location. You will find the address and contact information below.

In the next issue: Student Check-in and Schedule Pick-up dates and times.
A note from Mrs. Elder about backpacks

Many parents ask us about what kind of backpack to purchase for their child. We strongly urge you to avoid rolling backpacks, and this is the explanation provided by Ruth Elder, veteran 5th grade BASIS Language Arts and BOSS camp teacher:

A good backpack is an essential tool for helping your student to be organized and ready for class. Too small is frustrating and too large becomes a black hole where important papers are lost. Regular backpacks with straps to be worn on the back are the best. They provide ample space and pockets for necessary items. The large pocket is perfect for 1" binders and textbooks. Remember: you have a locker! Packing the backpack for morning classes and then switching materials at lunch means it won't be too heavy to carry throughout the day. A pencil case fits nicely in the front pockets and keeps pens and pencils handy. Rolling backpacks are discouraged because they are cumbersome in the halls and classrooms and tend to hold too much, making it harder to find what is needed.

Student Check-in and Schedule Pick-Up

ALL students are required to attend Check-in and Schedule Pick-up. Parents must accompany students under the age of 18.

At Check-in Students will:
  • choose their lockers
  • buy a Communication Journal (5-8 graders are required)
  • get their schedules.
Returning students will also get their AIMS and Stanford 9 test results.

Parents will review their children's immunizations and complete required paperwork.

Representatives will have information about the Boosters, Athletics, Fine Arts, and Late Bird programs.

We invite students and parents to look around the school, familiarize themselves with the new campus, and find their classrooms.

Dates and times for each grade will be sent in an email, and will also be announced in the July Newsletter.

Meet Mrs. Wohlford- BASIS Tucson North Lower School Director

Mrs. Wohlford joined the BASIS team in 2010 and taught math at BASIS Tucson before becoming the Lower School Director for BASIS Tucson North.  She has taught a wide range of math courses to students in 5th - 12th grade in various schools. She served in the Air Force for four years after graduating from college, then she followed her husband all over the world while he served in the military.  She has lived in Australia, Iceland, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, Alabama, and Montana but she was born in Arizona.  She has three sons who are BASIS Tucson North students.  In her spare time, which occurs at 4:30 a.m. each school day, Mrs. Wohlford can be found walking on her treadmill while reading the latest mystery novel.
