featureMONTHLY FEATURED TOPIC -
Cultural Competence

Culture is everywhere. Each of us brings our own cultural values and beliefs to our work with families, and each family's culture impacts their participation in intervention. Developing cultural competence is a journey that begins with an awareness of how culture impacts what you do.

Take some time this month to think about how cultural variables in your community impact how you support children and families. The resources in this update will help you on your journey to becoming more culturally competent!

Kaleidoscope: New Perspectives in Service Coordination, Levels I and II are required professional development trainings for all new service coordinators (although all are invited!) Trainings are held twice per year in cadres (KI and KII occurring in same location, one month apart) so that service coordinators have the opportunity to learn with each other for both Kaleidoscope sessions. Spring Kaleidoscope sessions take place in the Valley region during March (KI)/April (KII). Fall Kaleidoscope sessions are scheduled in the Richmond region during September (KI)/ October (KII).

SPRING 2014

Registration is now available for spring 2014 KI and KII training. Both trainings will be held at the Plecker Work Force Center at Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave.

  • KII - April 16 and 17, 2014. Click here to register.
tot TALKS ON TUESDAYS

Talks on Tuesdays (ToTs) are one-hour webinars designed to provide free online training opportunities related to important topics in early intervention. Topics chosen for the Talks on Tuesdays webinar series are based on feedback from EI practitioners about what they need to know more about! ToTs are held on the first Tuesday of the month from 12:00-1:00PM.

FEATURED TOPIC, FEATURED WEBINARS

Check out this archived Talks on Tuesday webinar that ties to cultural competence:

Cultural Goggles

Cultural Goggles, Everybody's Got 'Em

Plan to join us on Tuesday, March 4th for our next ToT with Beth Cooper and Tracy Miller from Rehabilitation Associates who will be joining us to talk about supporting infants and toddlers with Down syndrome and their families! Register today!

PLEASE NOTE:

Registration slots for our ToTs frequently fill quickly HOWEVER far fewer people join the actual webinar. We'd like to request that you register only if you plan to attend so that all who are interested are able to login. Additionally, if you participate as a group, each individual does not need to register. One person can register for the group and can then share the access to the survey allowing each individual to obtain a certificate of participation. As a reminder, all ToTs are archived for your ease of access at times convenient to you. Thank you in advance for helping.
WE NEED PICTURES OF EARLY INTERVENTION IN ACTION!

We are collecting photos of intervention visits that show service providers interacting with children and families. We'd love to capture a variety of natural environments too. If you have photos that you can share or are willing to let us tag along on a visit, please contact Cori Hill.
