Ed Brauer

WOW!  So many people to thank during my two years as Commodore.  THANK YOU to all the Flag Officers, the Welcome Committee, and all the members that volunteered for the many events sponsored by our club.  You have helped to make PGSC the best sailing club on Charlotte Harbor.

A BIG THANK YOU to John Bojarski for his position as Webmaster for 15 years!!! John has made the PGSC website the most read website in Southwest Florida.  John and our new Webmaster, George Adamczyk, have worked together for several months to keep it the best of the best!

Thank you to Carol Geiger for over two years serving as our Jib Sheet Editor. Carol went over and above her responsibilities as the Jib Sheet Editor to make sure that our newsletter was accurate and up to date with current information for our members.  We welcome Jeff Ellis as the new Jib Sheet Editor.

Congratulations to Sarah Buck as the incoming Vice Chair for the Charlotte County Marine Advisory Committee.  Thank you also for serving on this committee as our representative.

The 2015 PGSC calendar is on our website.  Please check out all the many events scheduled for 2015 and mark the dates on your calendar.  We need your participation to make these events happen in 2015 and in the future.

Did you see the great article in Harbor Style December, 2014 issue featuring Punta Gorda Boaters Alliance.

Look for the PGSC Christmas Card at the Kiwanis Christmas Card Lane at Gilchrist Park.  The cards will be on display from December 6, 2014 through January, 2, 2015.  Thank you to John, BJ and Mary Beth Fox for designing our Christmas Card.

NEWS FROM THE VICE COMMODORE

Diva Gorda To Participate In The Rim Canal Parade!

Rudy Gottschlich

The presentations regarding the 2 lighted boat parades staged in and around Punta Gorda by Sarah Buck and Captain Doug Buuck, Bob Peterson, and Tom Little certainly were thorough.

Unfortunately we aboard Diva Gorda are committed to race in the Holiday Regatta on December 13th and 14th, which conflicts with the Charlotte Harbor Lighted Boat Parade sponsored by the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce.  However, at the enthusiastic urging of my crew, we have entered her into the Rim Canal Parade on December 20th.   Here's hoping that other skippers will come forward and show our pennant in a safe and merry parade.

Unfortunately I cannot give a current update on the COW because the final ticket count will not be available until after this writing and perhaps not even until after the Jib Sheet's December 1st publishing date, though the ordering deadline for the meals is before then.  Hopefully, those of our members who have returned from their 3 week cruise to the North and the snowbirds who delayed their return until after Thanksgiving, all have their "checks in the mail".

Looking ahead to the program segment of the January 14th, 2015 general membership meeting which will be chaired by Vice Commodore Elect Todd Taylor, the 40th year anniversary committee under the leadership of Bob Anderson will present us with their plans for the upcoming year.  Beyond then, Todd has been busy trying to line up presentations based on the results of the survey topics which he circulated last month and  describes below.

********************************************

Ahoy Mateys,

I want to thank all of you who participated in our ad hoc survey at the last meeting. The results were interesting and I am already talking to several people/groups to come make presentations to our sailing club. The top five subjects were:

  • Sail trim
  • USCG navigation regulations
  • What's new in electronics
  • Easy to prepare dishes for cruising
  • And last but not least... Rum tasting!

We are always interested in hearing from any of our members who would like to give a talk about their sailing experience. You can reach me at  [email protected]

Thanks and I hope to hear  from some of you.

Warm Regards,

Todd Taylor, Vice Commodore Elect

May you have fair winds and following seas

REAR COMMODORE

Eager For The Challenge!

I knew Dan was busy this time of the year with a vacation and a few charters planned.....SO,  I said I would take over the position early and help him out..........................WELL..........................the term "Baptism by fire" comes to mind.  With Dan's busy charter schedule I don't know how he got all of this done.  GOOD JOB DAN!

Awards, Ships Store, learning the club by-laws, officer's manual, communications (jib sheet, website,  publishing the club in the media), I was overwhelmed.  After spending many hours looking over all the information for the Rear Commodore position, I am happy to report that I GOT this!  Thankfully, Vicki and Bill Welsh are going to be handling the constant contact email blasts, Jeff Ellis will be the Jib Sheet Editor and George Adamczyk will be our Webmaster.  I am grateful for all their help.............OR, I would be overwhelmed!!!!!!

Awards - Golden Duck, Gilligan, Marilyn Brown, Ed McDowell, Bob Crump plus the Moonlight Regatta, Picture of Beer, Most Improved Racer and  Officer Flags.   My head was swimming.  I need to learn what all these awards mean and get them to the engravers before the COW on December 6th.  Not to mention ordering the Fall Series Awards coming up at our January, 2015 Membership Meeting.

Name Tags - A few orders were placed at the November Meeting and Dan had a few in the Ships Store Inventory.  Please see me at the COW to pick up your name tags or at the January 14th Meeting.  I will not be there at the January meeting but will have the Ships Store open by a volunteer.

Looking forward to the challenges of this position and learning more about the Rear Commodore responsibilities.

GOLDEN CONCH REGATTA - JANUARY 17-18, 2015

The 2015 Golden Conch Regatta hosted by the Platinum Point Yacht Club is scheduled for January 17 & 18  at Burnt Store Marina.

Please visit the PPYC website (http://www.ppycbsm.com/) for copies of the NOR and the Entry Form.

CHARLOTTE HARBOR REGATTA - FEBRUARY 6-8, 2015

The 2015 Charlotte Harbor Regatta (CHR)  is just a few months away. Go to  charlotteharborregatta.com and take a look at what is planned for this the 6th annual CHR. Over these five past years, approximately $10,000  in funds have been distributed to our local youth and community sailing organizations due, in part, from your participation as a volunteer. Thanks so much for giving of your time.

We are planning for the upcoming CHR and would like to know if you will be able to give assistance by volunteering again. The dates of the regatta are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, February 6-8, 2015

Volunteers Needed
All volunteers will receive a $10 coupon to Coral Reef Apparel where you can get an official CHR 2015 T- shirt or use the coupon towards purchase of other items.

All volunteers are invited to attend the Friday evening party at the Beach Complex.

All volunteers providing use of their boats will receive a $20 fuel voucher for each day of service.

Although its a lot of work, helping out at the CHR has been a rewarding experience. It has brought our local boating community closer together and, in the end, is a source of funds for our local sailing programs.

Please respond to me at [email protected]  as to whether you will be able to help out again this year. Feel free to indicate how many days you can help, any specific thing you would enjoy doing, and especially whether you can provide a boat.

 MARINE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Greetings Sailors..............

Charlotte County

The November Marine Advisory Committee meeting was uneventful.  Various dredging projects are slow due to permits from Fisheries, DEP, and Parks Department.  The largest struggle is at Stump Pass where a large area is filling in and boaters are reporting difficulties. Discussion followed. The main dredge and groin placement, (to prevent beach erosion) are awaiting permits.  Staff recommends possible emergency dredging and move some markers until permits for larger project can be received. Recommended that boaters contact Stump Pass Marina for updates before you plan your trip. Commissioner S. Deutch will follow up on this item.

Updates on projects for Bay Heights, Chadwick Cove, and proposed Charlotte Harbor Walk, were not discussed.  Debra Forrester, Andy Stevens, and Marine Officer Roland were unavailable due to the holiday.

Last month the position of Vice Chair of M.A.C. became available.  I "threw my hat in the ring" and have won the election.  Your PGSC REPRESENTATIVE is now the Vice Chair.  PGSC has never held this position before AND never by a female sailor!

MAC will hold their December meeting on 12/11/2014. Hope to see you there!

Respectfully submitted, Sarah Buck

RACING NOTES
The First Race Of The Spring Series Is January 11th!!!!!

Roger Strube

Dayton "Butch" Dorey

So, have all of you racers registered for the ODRMS (One Day Race Management Seminar)? This seminar is presented by a US Sailing certified instructor. If you successfully complete the optional quiz at the end of the seminar, you will be qualified to conduct club races. The instructions for registering are on the PGSC web site.

Hey sailors, it has been a challenging fall sailing season. We had light winds, heavy winds, shifting winds and that was just one race. We have 24 boats registered for the final race of the Fall Series. Several boats entered after the series started. The competition has been fierce and there are many places that are still undecided. The last race of the season is Sunday, December 7th.

The Holiday Regatta is coming fast December 12th - 14th. The skippers' meeting is Friday, December 12th. Two races are planned for Saturday and the traditional Reverse Start (Pursuit) distance race for Sunday. There will be a dinner Saturday, December 7th. The Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and entry form are on the PGSC website, www.pgscweb.com. This is the second regatta in the Boat of the Year series. The BOTY series is sponsored by West Florida PHRF, our handicapping organization. The series is based on five regattas. Three races are scored from each regatta and the best ten scores of the fifteen races determine the winner.

When one season ends it is just the beginning of the next season. The first race of the Spring Series is January 11th. The Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and Entry Form will be on the PGSC web site soon. Sign up early and avoid the rush.

I want to give a BIG thank you to all the racers that competed and the non-racers that supported the racing this year. From showing up and racing, to working on the committee boat, to hosting one of the picnics, all sometimes in less than ideal conditions. THANK YOU!!

CRUISING NEWS
Very Windy 'Picture Of Beer' Race
Nick Maggio
Nick Maggio

Barry Nielsen

2014 Picture of Beer

After a long hot summer, the anticipation for 'The Picture of Beerrace was high. Everyone was looking forward to getting out on the water again as well as to the festivities following the race. Bill and Kim Paar (2013 winners) came up with a Hawaiian theme as well as a challenging nautical crossword puzzle to be completed by the racers while underway.

As usual, we were keeping an eye on the weather forecast, hoping for clear skies and good sailing conditions. Four or five days prior to the race, we were concerned that we were going to be experiencing more wind than we wanted ahead of a fast moving cold front (you know that old saying -there are only three kinds of wind -too much, too little, wrong direction). We debated postponing/rescheduling the race but the calendar was pretty crowded for the rest of the year, so we decided to go ahead with the race and remind each skipper that it was their call as to whether or not they felt comfortable sailing in the forecasted conditions. This was not one of our better decisions.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, twelve of the seventeen boats that had signed up to race were at the starting line. Not wanting to test Mother Nature too much, most of us had reefed our mainsails. After the start, we were breathing a sigh of relief as we sailed on a broad reach toward marker five.I have to confess that I even thought that maybe I should not have put that reef in.

Unfortunately, the Euphoria (not a good name for a boat on this day) that we were feeling was short lived. Before reaching marker five, the wind started to build.  Boats were rounding up out of control as near gale force gusts hit from a range of directions. The fun had begun (or was it over).

After rounding marker five, conditions only deteriorated. I'm not saying that it was like the famous Sydney -Hobart race, but it was certainly more than we bargained for. For many of us, it was no longer a race but a test of survival. How much of this beating could we take? How much could our boats take? According to our chart plotters, the ICW that would lead us to Gasparilla Marina seemed like an eternity away.

While many of us abandoned the designated finish at marker four and instead tried to hold the shortest course to the ICW, a few boats soldiered on to the finish line. The first boat to reach marker four was Serendipity, skippered by Mike Busher. In a superb demonstration of heavy weather sailing, Euphoria, skippered by Ed Brauer, was only a few boat lengths behind (FYI-Euphoria light 30boat).  At the post race party, Mike reminded us that as a previous winner of this race, he was ineligible to win again. Besides, as he pointed out, if this race was handicapped in the way that series races are handicapped, Euphoria would have corrected over him. So, in one of the most memorable 'Picture of Beerraces, Ed Brauer and crew on Euphoria were declared the winners (although Mike and his crew polished off the pitcher of beer in Ed's honor as he had to sail back to Port Charlotte to be ready to race again the next day).

Five boats that didn't start the race went to Gasparilla before the weather took a turn for the worse, so we ended up with just shy of 60 club members celebrating/surviving the 2014 'Picture of Beer'. A few head sails were torn and some engines overheated but thankfully, no one was hurt. Our hats are off to Bill and Kim Paar who did a great job of organizing and running the race. We'll be back next year, but we'll be hoping for tamer conditions.

2014 North Cruise

Nine boats that sailed in 'The Picture of Beerwere joineby six others as we began our annual cruise north from Gasparilla. Chuck Witzkewith first mate Sandi, led our flotilla north. Our first stop was an anchorage off the ICW where we took our dinghies to Don Pedro Island for a Happy Hour at the Pavilion.  After a bone chilling night, we headed north to the anchorage off of Marina Jacks. From there we headed to Longboat Key,Emerson Point, St. Petersburg, Gulfport, Cleawater and Caledesi.

As with any cruise, not everyone has the same schedule and boats were departing and reconnecting. There are always challenges with weather and boat issues but that is part of what cruising entails. It's not just a vacation on your boat but a change of pace that challenges your skills and resourcefulness. Even if you have been to the destinations time and again, there is always something new to discover as well as memories of old cruises to be rekindled.

Everyone enjoyed this cruise and we were especially pleased to have so many cruisers join us for the first time. We hope that it won't be the last.

We really owe a special thank you to Chuck and Sandi Witzke. Chuck has led so many of these cruises that he should not be known as a 'Cruise Captainbut rather as the 'Cruise Admiral'. Thanks to both of you for your willingness to step up for the club.

Nick and I have enjoyed being your cruiscaptains for 2014 and as we turn the helm over to John Welsh and Ted Goodwin, we look forward to more cruising with our friends in the Punta Gorda Sailing Club.
