CHARLOTTE HARBOR COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER (CHCSC) | |
CHCSC Plans June Resumption of Programs
One of the cornerstone values of the Punta Gorda Sailing Club is to support youth sailing programs. Toward that end, we offer the following update regarding the Charlotte Harbor Community Sailing Center (CHCSC.)
CHCSC is working with Charlotte County Parks and Recreation management to resume youth sailing in June. The venue for the program will be the Beach Complex in Port Charlotte where youth sail training began in 1984. Boat storage is not available at the Beach Complex at this time but discussions toward that end are ongoing. Infrastructure for disabled sailing is also being considered.
The boats used for the June programs will be primarily Sunfish and Optimist prams. The Optimist pram is safe and easily handled by the youngest students. The Sunfish is an exciting high performance boat for "youth" from 13 to 83 years young. Trailer racks are under construction to transport these boats from the storage area to the Beach Complex. Racks for 6 boats are completed now. Six more will be in service for programs in June.
CHCSC has certified instructors, proven lesson plans, sufficient boats and an experienced core team so we look forward to the continued satisfaction of parents and students.
However, your help is needed. We need volunteers to assist in transporting boats to and from the Beach Complex, unloading and loading trailers and making boats ready for sailing. Those of us who have done this work know how satisfying it is to see the confidence and skills gained by the sailing students.
Please contact Dennis Peck at bdselah1@bdsailing.com or 941-456-8542 for more information and to volunteer to help.
Surely our community can provide an equal experience for our youth. Pay forward for a better community!

The Charlotte County Marine Exercise at Fisherman's Village (involving multiple area agencies) is on May 15th from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., however volunteers would be needed at 8:00 a.m. for briefings, victim, preparation, etc. We will need several boats for observers, controllers, media and safety. We also need individuals as victims, but none will end up in the water. We will be using dummies (solid and inflatable) in the water for divers to retrieve and/or rescue. TREASURER'S COMMENTS
| |
A Year In The Life Of Our Treasurer
 | | Jerry Haller |
Do you ever wonder what the Treasurer does? Here is a sample of last year's activity:
- Processed 150 event reports submitted by officers and committees (Event reports document each financial transaction)
- Deposited over $27,000 (over 500 member checks processed)
- Wrote and mailed 80 checks for club expenses
- Prepared and presented the annual budget
- Provided data for the Federal tax return
This is aided by computer software that reduces the drudgery. Except each check deposited must be stamped by hand.

RACING NOTES | |
One More Race Left In The Spring Series
 | | John Lange |
It's May already and many of you are traveling about the world, we will miss seeing you on our local waters and are envious of the places you are going.
At the writing of this article, we have one race left for the spring series. I am looking forward to presenting awards at the May Meeting, please be there or have a representative from your boat at the meeting to accept your awards. A SPECIAL THANKS to the Committee Boat Skippers, PRO's, and Crew. Thanks to the picnic cooks and everyone that brought food; you made the picnics a special treat. Thanks again for your service, we couldn't run this program without you.
Looking forward to the summer racing series, I need your guidance and suggestions as to how we want to handle committee boat duty. Not sure how this was handled in the past, but last year we all pitched in to provide committee and PRO services. I am thinking that we may want a later in the day start time to take advantage of the off shore breezes and we might just take turns as PRO and official starter so everyone races, then radio in our finish times. We can gather for after race picnics and just grill out and bring our own food. What do YOU think?
Give me a call at 941-380-7152 or email john@CharlotteHarborSails.com with your suggestions.
Once again, I challenge each Skipper to include youth or young adults as crew on your boats. This young talent is eager and has the stamina to do all the things you used to do, if you would just spend some time and take a kid sailing. Contact Dennis Peck at the Community Sailing Center and see if he can make some recommendations.
Get involved with Youth Sailing on Charlotte Harbor, there are two very good programs running in the area. I know that they would both benefit from your experience and help.
John Lange, Fleet Racing Captain

CRUISING NEWS |
Hope to see you at Pelican Bay for the Memorial Day Weekend Cruise
 | | Nick Maggio |
 | |
Bob Mudge |
The South Cruise started out at Pelican Bay on April 8th. The next morning 10 boats headed south motor sailing on the inside to St. James City. We anchored for the night and took our dinghies into the Waterside Grill for happy hour and dinner. The next day, six boats went to Bimini Basin and those that couldn't get under the 55 foot power lines leading into the anchorage went on to the mooring field at Ft. Myers Beach. After one night on a mooring ball, a few boats moved to the Pink Shell Resort and enjoyed their pool and beach for the day. It was a lumpy motor sail to the mooring field at the Naples City Marina. We spent a few days exploring and shopping at Tin City before moving on to Smokehouse Bay at Marco Island by way of the waterway that runs between Marco Island and the Gordon River. One boat went on to Goodland and another to Marathon, but due to the wind being out of the south, most of us decided to stay at Smokehouse Bay a few days and enjoy the area on land, playing some games and visiting the Marco Farmers Market. At this time, the boats that planned to only be out for 2 weeks began the trek back north towards home. The rest of us waited another day and were able to sail to Gordon Pass and returned to the mooring field in Naples where we went into town to enjoy a great dinner at the Old Naples Pub. Retracing our route, we sailed on a broad reach to Matanzas Pass and proceeded to pick up mooring balls again at Ft. Myers Beach. While there, we connected with a few PGSC members who weren't able to leave on the 8th as well as some of the group that had spent the last three weeks in the Keys. We all went for happy hour and dinner at Nervous Nellies and had a great time. Then it was time for most of us to begin the final leg of our journey back to Pelican Bay. A couple of boats wishing to extend their time on the water stopped by Glover Bight before heading north on the ICW. From what I could see, everyone had a great time and they were looking forward to cruising again with the PGSC.
The Memorial Day Weekend Cruise on May 25th to Pelican Bay is just around the corner. You can sign up at the Steak Dinner and don't forget to bring your $5.00 per person. We need to know how many people are coming in order to buy the right amount of food for the Sunday BBQ. We will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs and everyone can bring a side dish and/or dessert to share. Gail Morris will be collecting the $5.00 for the Sunday BBQ. A check may be sent to Gail at 146 Hibiscus, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. She can also be reached at tgmorris22@yahoo.com or by phone, 573-280-0805. NO CASH WILL BE ACCEPTED OVER THE WEEKEND. We hope to see you at Pelican Bay for another great time!

Editor's Note: Received an email addressed to Jib Sheet Editor from Jeff Sharkey, a non-member who traveled on Sea Rover with John Amalfitano to Key West. Nice to receive an email thanking our members for making him feel such a part of our member group. I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff while on our travels to Key West and it is not hard to like such a fun loving guy. Here is what Jeff wrote:
"Recently had the pleasure of being crew on Captain John Amalfitano's boat during the PGSC cruise to Key West. I would like to thank all the members of the club who made me feel like an old friend. Thank you all for your hospitality and kindness, and especially to Captain John.
Fair Winds, Jeff Sharkey."

Interested in Sailing the Greek Islands in 2013
Toli and Rita Simos would like to meet Punta Gorda Sailing Club Members who would like to sail the Greek Islands. They have been sailing the Greek Waters since the early eighties and are very familiar with them. Their friend, Panouseris (visit www.panouseris-yachts.com ) owns and charters seven sailboats (40'to 50') mostly monohull Beneteaus. Every year they charter a boat and spend part or the summer visiting the Greek Islands. We invite old and new friends to join us in our travels. My favorite ports are around the Athens area, mostly in the Saronic and the Peloponese, and part of the Aegean . It depends on the mood and the time, we try to stay away from the "in islands" which are inundated with Tourists and concentrate on islands that have true Hellenic beauty and offer Greek hospitality. The website has all seven boats. We recommend a minimum of two week stay.
