With the help of a rat casino, University of British Columbia brain researchers have successfully reduced behaviors in rats that are commonly associated with compulsive gambling in humans.
 
Problem Gambling More Prevalent Among Men, Gambling Prevalence in South Australia 2012 Survey Find 

Gambling Prevalence in South Australia 2012 surveyed 9400 adults and found only a quarter of problem gamblers seek help for their addiction. The survey, conducted between October and December last year, is the fifth evaluation of gambling activity among South Australians since 1995. It found problem gambling was more prevalent among men, particularly those with no post-secondary education or who earned very low incomes.

 

Michael R. Stone: Gifting kids gambling products is not age-appropriate - or wise 

Thoughtful holiday gifts are age-appropriate ones. Gifting young people with lottery tickets, scratch-offs, pull tabs or parimutuel tickets is not age appropriate.  Actually, it is illegal in Kentucky for anyone under 18 to buy a lottery ticket, play a pull tab or wager on a horse race. Responsible parents encourage lawful behavior. They do not flaunt the law. It is inappropriate to encourage young people to gamble for more reasons than just that it is against the law. It can be a gateway activity to other risky behaviors."
