The Vietnam Drug User Returns

This report is from 1973, but I found it very interesting and wanted to share if you weren't familiar with it.  It gives a bit of perspective not only with many Vietnam Veterans with substance abuse issues, but also some insight on veterans of other wars and their dependence on substances. 

 

ReLaunch of addiction website: The Fix -- Addiction and Recovery, Straight Up

The Fix identifies itself as: "The world's leading website about addiction and recovery, featuring a daily mix of breaking news, exclusive interviews, investigative reports and essays on sober living."  On November 25th, it relaunched its site and may provide helpful information to providers and clients.

 

Heroin Summit: addiction doctor says managing addiction is 'indefinite' 

Jason Jerry, a physician in the Cleveland Clinic's Alcohol and Drug Recovery Center, discusses long-term addiction treatment options, including buprenorphine, for heroin addicts. 

 

Brooklyn Bar Raises Drinking Age to 25 Because Young People Are Annoying

Phil's Crummy Corner, located at 323 Columbia Street, Brooklyn, will only serve alcohol to patrons 25 and older on weekend nights. The decision comes after hordes of complaints from nearby residents about rowdy, loud late-night crowds-often present at the "family restaurant" until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays.

In 2011, a team of Texas consultants hired by the Oregon Lottery visited dozens of Portland-area bars, restaurants and "delis" with video slot and poker machines to ask hundreds of patrons about their gambling habits. What they found is the exact opposite of the fun-loving image the lottery has cultivated for years. The biggest chunk of players, according to documents obtained by The Oregonian, park in front of a machine and gamble alone until all their money is gone.

 

New Jersey launches statewide Internet gambling with 6 casinos

Convinced that New Jersey's new online gambling industry can withstand public demand, regulators cleared six Atlantic City casinos to open up Internet wagering to the general public November 25. As of early Tuesday morning, New Jersey became the third state in the country - joining Nevada and Delaware - to offer online gambling to the public. New Jersey and Delaware now offer a range of casino games, while Nevada offers online poker only.

 

Deal reached to develop new Davenport casino

The developer and city officials have found common ground so development of a new land-based casino can begin in Davenport, Iowa. The city, the developer and the Riverboat Development Authority have presented a variety of visions for the plan to create the new casino, and debate over those plans has stretched on for more than a year.

 

Gambling Addiction Help 

he state has added a new chat feature to the 1-800-BETS-OFF website which helps problem gamblers. Eric Pruess, the administrator of the Department of Public Health's gambling treatment program, says the chat adds another dimension to the website.

The manufacturing and use of synthetic or "legal" drugs is on the rise. This training will provide an understanding of a variety of Synthetics and Club Drugs on the streets today.

 

Advancing the Strategic Prevention Framework in Iowa -- Contact Training Resources to Register!

4 Locations: December 2 - Moravia, IA, December 4 - Mason City, IA, December 5 - Sioux City, IA, December 9 - Cedar Rapids/Marion, IA.

The training will advance the comprehensive strategic approach to prevention known as the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF). Challenges and successes related to the application of SPF will be explored. Lessons learned from the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Project will be described. Participants will also develop a shared vision of SPF in the future of Iowa's communities and counties.
