Real-life stories of former smokers' health problems provided the motivation smokers needed.

That's the conclusion of a report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) which funded its first nation-wide ad campaign to lower smoking rates in the U.S.


Substance abuse and mental disorders are now killing more people globally than HIV, diabetes and TB   More people are dying or falling ill as a result of substance abuse and mental disorders than from HIV, tuberculosis and diabetes, according to a new worldwide study.

Substance abuse among teenagers is declining, but heroin use is on the rise across all ages, the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health said.The expansive report, which the Obama administration released Wednesday, details levels of drug and alcohol abuse in the United States.  Full report here.

A Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center team studying alcohol addiction has new research that might shed light on why some drinkers are more susceptible to addiction than others.

Associate kinesiology professor Jim Lyons led a team of international scientists who looked at how evolution, or basic survival techniques adapted by early humans, influence the decisions gamblers make when placing bets.

Gambling and Health in the Workplace: A Research-based Guide about Gambling Disorders for Human Resources and Employee Assistance Professionals  Do you have questions about gambling disorders and the best resources to refer to employees? The National Center for Responsible Gaming (NCRG) developed a science-based guidebook designed just for human resource managers and employee assistance professionals titled "Gambling and Health in the Workplace.
 
MORE than half of people seeking help for gambling problems reported family violence in the previous year, an Australian study of problem betting has revealed.
 

Illinois gamblers could try their luck around the clock under a proposal regulators are weighing to allow the state's 10 casinos to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Illinois casinos are allowed to stay open for a maximum of 22 hours a day, but the gambling industry is pushing a plan to let them stay open the other two hours as well.

The 2013 Mental Health Conference is designed for professionals, clinicians, administrators, educators, consumers, family members, advocates and other providers.  This conference will:Provide an educational opportunity to hear professionals and experts share the most recent trends and issues, treatment methods, and research relating to mental health, mental illness and co-occurring disorders.. Provide a forum to stimulate discussion, exchange ideas, and strengthen the support and information network around the state.
Generate public interest in issues relating to mental health and co-occurring disorders.
