September is National Recovery Month Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible. For more information on binge drinking click here!National survey shows continued reduced levels of prescription drug use among young adultsThe rate of past month nonmedical use of prescription drugs among young adults aged 18 to 25 in 2012 was 5.3 percent - similar to rates in 2010 and 2011, but significantly lower than the rate from 2009 (6.4 percent), according to a new report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA issued its 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) report in conjunction with the 24th annual national observance of National Recovery Month.Prescription Painkiller Abuse Linked with Increased Risk of Heroin UseA new government report finds a link between prescription drug abuse and an increased risk of heroin use. Americans ages 12 to 49 who illegally use prescription drugs are 19 times more likely than others in their age group to begin using heroin, the report found.

Cedar Crossing Casino unveiled
That's the name of a casino project proposed for downtown Cedar Rapids. The official license application is now in the hands of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. Local investors turned in their homework early, last Friday. The application was due today at 2 p.m. READY, SET, BUILD: Hard Rock Hotel & Casino breaks groundCrews are already razing buildings, clearing lots and working on utilities for the 100,000-square foot gaming and entertainment complex at Third and Water streets. Officials hailed the casino's economic impact to the community. It will have an estimated workforce of 500, and is expected to encourage development in a previously neglected section of downtown Sioux City. Once you slot, you can't stop?
That's too broad a statement, according to Lisa H. of Gamblers Anonymous International Service Office in Los Angeles. She declined to give her last name because of the anonymous nature of her work.
Gambling addictions are unique to individuals, and you can't say that a casino will create a compulsive gambler or that it would draw out a latent compulsion, she said.
Links Made Between Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse, and Lack of Treatment Options
Problem gamblers are a hidden population among people with mental health or substance abuse issues who often don't get the treatment they need, a new study shows. Anywhere from 10 to 20 per cent of people with substance abuse problems also have significant gambling problem, yet few programs are targeted at them and most social service agencies don't have funds to treat them, the study's main author says.
