Substance Abuse: Noteworthy Articles and Studies
|

Kitson, a Los Angeles boutique popular with celebrities, is coming under fire from one celebrity for selling football jersey-like T-shirts with the names of prescription drugs including Vicodin, Adderall and Xanax.
On an average day, 881,684 teenagers aged 12 to 17 smoked cigarettes, according to a report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The report also says that on average day 646,707 adolescents smoked marijuana and 457,672 drank alcohol.
Parents Can Help Their Children Avoid Alcohol Pitfalls During Transition from High School to College Prior research has shown that the transition from high school to college is a particularly vulnerable time, associated with increased alcohol use and risk of negative alcohol-related consequences. While studies have examined the effectiveness of prevention programs to address this problem, few have examined which students may benefit the most. A study of student characteristics has found that parent-based interventions (PBIs) can be effective even among those students feeling high peer pressure to drink alcohol.

Eric Preuss replacing Mark Vander Linden as Program Manager of the Iowa Gambling Treatment & Prevention Program
Eric Preuss has assumed leadership of the Division of Behavioral Health Office of Problem Gambling Prevention and Treatment, the position previously held by Mark Vander Linden. Eric will work closely with Bob Kerksieck and Mary Crawford and with contractors and other stakeholders to assure a smooth transition and the continued effectiveness of the Gambling Treatment Program. Eric has more than 20 years of work experience in behavioral health and holds MA, IAADC, and CCS credentials. Eric has worked for IDPH since 2010, primarily coordinating Iowa Plan operations between IDPH and Magellan and leading IDPH substance abuse data management activities, as well as the IRHIT technology project. He's had a particular focus on quality improvement, including long-time participation in NIATx activities. Congratulations Eric!
Ads meant to deter problem gambling disappear from Oregon Lottery's lineup
With little fanfare, the Oregon Lottery is getting out of the business of guiding problem gamblers to services that can help them. The lottery has pulled an award-winning ad that urges problem gamblers to seek help, it has dropped its membership in the Oregon Council on Problem Gambling -- which it helped start -- and lottery officials will no longer attend conferences on gambling addiction.
Lottery officials announced last week that during the fiscal year which ended June 30, the Iowa lottery sold $339 million in tickets, gave out about $201 million in prizes and yielded almost $85 million for the state, most of which now goes into the general fund. Those are the biggest numbers in the 28 years the lottery has been in business.
Local Caesars officials presented a $50,000 check to Heartland Family Service on behalf of the Caesars Foundation for the Iowa Family Works residential substance-abuse treatment center for women.
