Substance Abuse: Noteworthy Articles and Studies

Children who grow up in poverty are more likely than wealthier children to smoke cigarettes, but they are less likely to binge drink and are no more prone to use marijuana, according to researchers at Duke Medicine.
When dramatic becomes dangerous: The relationship between smoking in movies and adolescent smoking Lacking a stable identity and searching outside of the self for acceptance is a combination that makes adolescents an especially impressionable age group often influenced by the messages within their environment. Substantial evidence suggests that exposure to smoking in movies is causally related to the initiation of smoking among U.S. adolescents. However, European youth have more access to movies that feature smoking, as many European countries have less strict regulations for smoking imagery in film. It's no longer shocking to hear of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder-and others simply facing a big test-taking ADHD medicine to boost their performance in school. But new studies point to a problem: There's little evidence that the drugs actually improve academic outcomes.

Problem Gambling: Noteworthy Articles and Studies

The social cost of gambling has been at the center of the debate over legalized casino gambling since the mid-1990s. Even now, more than a decade later, little progress has been made in researchers' ability to adequately identify and measure the potential costs of legalized gambling. There are a number of reasons for this lack of significant progress: (1) comorbidity, (2) survey data validity, (3) government expenditures and (4) the counterfactual scenario.
Gambling and the Brain: Why Neuroscience Research is Vital to Gambling Research
What is new over the past few decades is the research methodology based on advances in the field. This volume of Increasing the Odds: A Series Dedicated to Understanding Gambling Disorders focuses on studies representative of this new wave of neuroscience research.
