 New Survey Finds That Parents Who Support Marijuana Legalization Expect Strict Regulation of Its Availability to Kids

A new, nationally representative survey released today by The Partnership at Drugfree.org confirms that parents who support legalization of marijuana expect strict regulation of the substance's availability to kids and teens.

Women, we have a problem. According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control, American women are dying from drug overdoses and the misuse of drugs at an alarming rate.

A new study finds that high risk youth who present to the emergency room for treatment of injury from an assault are likely to possess guns, and have problems with substance abuse and aggressive behavior.

Experts are debating the safety of medical marijuana for children,NBC News reports. A number of states allow doctors to recommend a type of cannabis that doesn't produce a high for children with conditions including cancer, seizures and autism.

Rep. Joe Barton wants to help Poker-lovers stay on the couch.

The Texas Republican introduced a bill in Congress Thursday that would pave the way for states to legalize online poker without fear of federal intervention.


Ultimate Gaming completes test run of online poker site 
Ultimate Gaming has completed its 30-day field trial for Ultimate Poker, the first ever fully legal online gambling site in the United States.  The Nevada Gaming Control Board has recommended approval for the company to offer real money gambling atUltimateGaming.com.
 
If you don't follow tennis, you probably missed it. If you do follow the sport, you still probably missed it. Two weeks ago, the Mail on Sunday, a British newspaper, published an unsettling report in which a veteran sports corruption investigator claimed the following about tennis.... 
 

Casinos are directly linked to many positive impacts: They have created more than 12,700 jobs statewide, including more than 4,460 for table games; reduced property taxes; generated money for community projects; and spurred economic development. They serve as a tourist and entertainment destination, increasing traffic that benefits nearby businesses. Casinos also caused negative ripple effects, such as bankruptcies, divorces and mental health problems, according to critics and statistics from the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania. The more money people spend at casinos also leaves less discretionary income for other business, critics argue.

6th Annual National Rural Substance Abuse Prevention Conference 

August 7-9, 2013, Lancaster, SC. $150 for the three day event, includes breakfasts and working lunches.  Buy two registrations and get the third for free.  

Prevention of Youth Substance Abuse in Rural Communities is the only national conference that focuses on the unique challenges of prevention from a rural context.  The three day annual conference includes nationally recognized keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and optional evening activities.  The theme of this year's conference will focus on exploring future trends in prevention, including environmental prevention strategies and use of technology.
