Bath Salts Could be More Addictive Than Meth, Rat Study Suggests

The active ingredient in the synthetic drug known as bath salts could be more addictive than methamphetamine, a new study in rats suggests.

 

Substance abuse awareness at Camp Lejeune's first Rum and Vodka presentation 

Hundreds were in attendance at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune's first ever Rum and Vodka presentation. Co-sponsored by Headquarters Marine Corps Safety Division and Marine and Family Programs, the event is designed to promote substance abuse awareness and prevention. 

 

Drivers could be over limit on prescription pills: Thousands face prison and 12-month ban in 'zero-tolerance' crackdown  

Motorists who abuse prescription drugs face jail under a crackdown that also imposes a 'zero-tolerance' limit on illegal substances such as cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy.

Thousands of potentially lethal drug-drivers face a 12-month ban, six months' jail and up to a £5,000 fine under Britain's first ever official drug-drive limits.


Preventing Substance Use Disorders in People With Mental Illness
A researcher at Harvard Medical School is studying which substance use disorders are more common among people with different types of mental illness, and when they tend to develop. He hopes his research will one day be used to prevent drug and alcohol disorders among people with mental illness through early counseling, detection and treatment.

Generally speaking, people tend to follow others' behavior to avoid conflict (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004). In addition to helping us avoid conflict, social conformity may help us deal with negative emotions when things go awry (Berns et al., 2011). Is it true for gambling losses? This week's WAGER reviews an experiment that examined whether social conformity acts as an emotional buffer in response to bad outcomes from gambling (Yu & Sun, 2013).
 
Facebook to allow users to place bets on horse races and football matches and offer virtual slot machines for children  Facebook will offer real money betting on horse racing and football matches in a major expansion of its gambling operations.

Zynga readies its real-money gambling apps for Facebook

Zynga is taking the wraps off its real-money gambling games today at an event in Barcelona, Spain.

The San Francisco company says that social gaming remains its heart and soul, but the gambling games are a logical extension for fans who want to bet real money and win it in social games. Zynga will launch the games in the United Kingdom, where real-money online gambling is legal.


3 Indian Casinos Honored for Handling of Problem Gamblers 

This year, three Indian-owned casinos earned Silver Responsible Gambling Certifications for at least the fifth time: the San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino, the Viejas Casino & Resort and the Pechanga Resort & Casino.

"We applaud these three gaming facilities for continuing to take the necessary steps to help problem gamblers," said Robert Jacobson, executive director of the California Council on Problem Gaming. "

6th Annual National Rural Substance Abuse Prevention Conference 

August 7-9, 2013, Lancaster, SC. $150 for the three day event, includes breakfasts and working lunches.  Buy two registrations and get the third for free.  

Prevention of Youth Substance Abuse in Rural Communities is the only national conference that focuses on the unique challenges of prevention from a rural context.  The three day annual conference includes nationally recognized keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and optional evening activities.  The theme of this year's conference will focus on exploring future trends in prevention, including environmental prevention strategies and use of technology.
