Big alcohol catches up with adolescent girls

The alcoholic beverages industry has used advertising and events promotion to grant a form of equality to
young women that perhaps even the women's movement never intended. The industry knows that the alcoholic beverages market is economically mature. Individual companies can increase profits mainly by increasing their market share or by targeting young women. 

 

Opiate overdose deaths 'skyrocketed' in women, CDC finds 

More men still die after overdosing on prescription painkillers in the U.S. each year, but women are catching up fast, according to a grim new report from government health researchers.

 

Almost 70 Percent of Americans Take at Least One Prescription Medication, Study Finds

Almost 70 percent of Americans take at least one prescription medication, and more than half take at least two, according to a new study by researchers at the Mayo Clinic. The most common prescriptions are for antibiotics, antidepressants and opioid painkillers.

 

'Talk Sooner' app answers substance abuse questions for parents, children

Having a tough time talking to your kids about abusing prescription drugs or other substance abuse issues?

There's now an app for that.

For those of you who did not attend the Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse, the follow two presentations come highly reccomended! 
 

Dr. Westley Clark's presentation titled DSM V, Gambling, and Health Reform:  Opening the Door.  This was from his opening Keynote June 26 at the 2013 Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse (MCPGSA).   

 

Julie Hynes keynote on how risk and protective factors apply to problem gambling - excellent research.

 

Facial recognition technology to nab casino's banned gamblers

The technology will be able to match a database of known problem gamblers with people attempting to or actually gambling at the casino.

 

Schuette looking forward to Indian casino argument before Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court has decided to hear Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette's arguments against the opening of an Upper Peninsula Indian community's casino in Vanderbilt.

The high court this fall will review a federal appeals court ruling last summer that cleared the way for the Bay Mills Indian Community to go ahead with the Vanderbilt casino.

6th Annual National Rural Substance Abuse Prevention Conference 

August 7-9, 2013, Lancaster, SC. $150 for the three day event, includes breakfasts and working lunches.  Buy two registrations and get the third for free.  

Prevention of Youth Substance Abuse in Rural Communities is the only national conference that focuses on the unique challenges of prevention from a rural context.  The three day annual conference includes nationally recognized keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and optional evening activities.  The theme of this year's conference will focus on exploring future trends in prevention, including environmental prevention strategies and use of technology.
