One Million Former Smokers Took Up Cigarettes Again After 9/11, Study Suggests

An estimated one million former smokers took up cigarettes again after the 9/11 attacks on America, a new study suggests. The stress of the events of that day led to the resurgence of smoking among people who had previously quit, the researchers report.

 

Lawmakers call for clampdown on prescription drug abuse 

Legislators want the federal government to crack down on prescription drug abuse, which they warn is a national crisis.

35 Percent of Designated Drivers Drink, Study Finds 

A new study of designated drivers finds 35 percent of them drink. Many imbibing designated drivers have blood-alcohol levels high enough to impair their driving, researchers from the University of Florida report. 

 

Mothers Who Smoke While Pregnant Put Kids at Risk of Substance Abuse 

Exposure to cigarette smoke in the womb may interfere with the brain's reward system, and make children more vulnerable to addictions.

Adrian Grenier is an actor, director and producer best known for his role in the Emmy-nominated HBO series, "Entourage." He produced a documentary film "How To Make Money Selling Drugs," available on cable's On Demand and iTunes. It opens in select theaters on June 26.

A community nonprofit group that jointly holds Osceola's gambling license said Friday it has reached a $3.1 million settlement to drop state and federal lawsuits against the owners of Lakeside Casino.
 
A statewide study of Iowa's gambling markets authorized Thursday could open the door to plans for new casinos in Cedar Rapids, Jefferson and other cities.
 

The fertile fields  here in Greene County are planted in corn and soybeans, but local economic development officials are now hoping to add a third cash crop - casino gambling. Casino supporters turned in petitions with 750 signatures on Tuesday to the Greene County auditor's office, ensuring a referendum will be held here whether to permit a casino.

 

Study suggests nearly half of Alberta's gambling revenue comes from addicts  

A new study suggests nearly half of Alberta's gambling revenue comes from gambling addicts and researchers say that's "problematic." Gambling has long been a valuable source of government revenue, used to pay for health care and education. Research out of the University of Lethbridge shows that between 40 to 50 per cent of revenue generated is made on the backs of addicts.

A Primer of DSM-5 Webinar Training   Wednesday, June 26 from 12pm-1:30PM, CTZ with Dr. Donald W. Black.  This workshop is designed to cover the changes and practical implications of the DSM-5. Dr. Black will discuss the history and development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the important changes in the manual. He will also review the 3 important changes in the criteria used in adults.

The three-day, multi-state summit features internationally and nationally renowned experts in the fields of problem gambling, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Last year, the conference hosted more than 200 attendees from throughout the country.

6th Annual National Rural Substance Abuse Prevention Conference 

August 7-9, 2013, Lancaster, SC. $150 for the three day event, includes breakfasts and working lunches.  Buy two registrations and get the third for free.  

Prevention of Youth Substance Abuse in Rural Communities is the only national conference that focuses on the unique challenges of prevention from a rural context.  The three day annual conference includes nationally recognized keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and optional evening activities.  The theme of this year's conference will focus on exploring future trends in prevention, including environmental prevention strategies and use of technology.
