State Legislators Grapple With How to Implement Marijuana DUI Rules
Lawmakers in Washington state, where recreational marijuana use is now legal, are trying to determine how police officers can identify drivers impaired by marijuana use.
Commentary: Drug Courts' Positive Effects on Families and Society
Jails and prisons in America are overflowing with people who suffer from substance use disorders. In fact, more than three quarters of inmates have either been arrested for a drug- or alcohol-related crime, have been intoxicated at the time of their arrest, have a history of regular drug or alcohol use, or have previously received drug or alcohol treatment.
23% of Teens Surveyed Admit to Driving Under Influence of Alcohol or Drugs
A new survey of teens finds 23 percent admit they have driven under the influence of alcohol, prescription drugs or marijuana. Almost 20 percent of teens who drink and drive say alcohol improves their driving, while 34 percent say the same about marijuana.

Problem Gambling: Noteworthy Articles and Studies

When a new opportunity to gamble - whether a casino, the lottery or other forms of gambling - comes into a community, assumptions swirl around about whether or not the rate of disordered gambling will increase. Does exposure to gambling opportunities pose a risk to our health and increase the rate of gambling problems in a community?
The world's largest clinical trial for problem gambling treatment has been conducted in New Zealand by an AUT University research team. 'The Effectiveness of Problem Gambling Brief Telephone Interventions: A Randomized Controlled Trial', funded by the Ministry of Health, involved 462 callers to New Zealand's Gambling Helpline.
GRUBER COLUMN: A changing view of problem gambling
Problem gambling has often been described as a "hidden addiction." It doesn't have the outward signs that are observed with other addictions like alcohol or drugs. It also hasn't received the same attention as those addictive behaviors. With the recent publication of the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5), some changes are taking place. DSM 5, published by the American Psychiatric Association, has a number of significant changes including the way problem gambling is categorized.
Lasell College first in the state to offer a degree in resort and casino management
Lasell College will offer a bachelor's degree in resort and casino management this fall, making it the first Massachusetts school to teach its students in-depth about how to operate a casino, according to Lasell officials.
