The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) said Thursday that Google continues to allow ads for illegal online pharmacies that sell counterfeit or illegal drugs.
 
The newly released update to psychiatry's diagnostic manual combines problem drinking and alcoholism into a single condition known as "alcohol use disorder," which some experts say could lead binge drinkers to be mislabeled as alcoholics.
 
A new report shows that the number of emergency department visits involving adverse reactions to the sleep medication zolpidem rose nearly 220 percent from 6,111 visits in 2005 to 19,487 visits in 2010.   The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) report also finds that in 2010 patients aged 45 or older represented about three-quarters (74 percent) of all emergency department visits involving adverse reactions to zolpidem.
 
The smoking cessation drug varenicline (Chantix) shows promise in treating alcohol dependence, a new study suggests. The study, conducted by scientists at the National Institute of Health, found the drug significantly reduces alcohol consumption and craving in people who are alcohol-dependent

A Primer of DSM-5 Webinar Training   Wednesday, June 26 from 12pm-1:30PM, CTZ with Dr. Donald W. Black.  This workshop is designed to cover the changes and practical implications of the DSM-5. Dr. Black will discuss the history and development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the important changes in the manual. The three-day, multi-state summit features internationally and nationally renowned experts in the fields of problem gambling, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Last year, the conference hosted more than 200 attendees from throughout the country.

Prevention of Youth Substance Abuse in Rural Communities is the only national conference that focuses on the unique challenges of prevention from a rural context.  The three day annual conference includes nationally recognized keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and optional evening activities.  The theme of this year's conference will focus on exploring future trends in prevention, including environmental prevention strategies and use of technology.
