Iowa Prevention Workforce Survey 

Survey will close on June 7

  

You may have already received information about the Iowa Prevention Workforce Survey. If so, please use this as a reminder to complete the survey!  If not, please read below and participate in the Iowa Prevention Workforce Survey.

 

The link at the bottom of this e-mail will take you to the prevention workforce development survey we told you about a few days ago. Please click on the link and complete the survey as soon as possible.

 

The information from the survey will be instrumental in the development of a plan to effectively support prevention professional development in Iowa.

 

The survey will take about 20-25 minutes to complete.  The Iowa Certification Board has authorized granting .5 continuing education hours for completion of the survey.

 

Your responses will be submitted anonymously and will be combined with all the other responses from coalition leaders, prevention providers to develop a statewide profile of who delivers substance abuse prevention services in Iowa and what their strengths and training needs are. Responses will be compiled by the end of June and will be shared with the Iowa prevention community.

Update on Mental Health Benefits and Substance Use Disorder Services Under the Affordable Care Act  Come next year, psychiatrists will start seeing patients who have purchased new individual and small-group health plans on the state exchanges mandated by the Affordable Care Act. But mental health benefits will differ from state to state, and it is hard to know whether they will meet the requirements of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA).
 
While substance abuse issues face college students nationwide, many health professionals are claiming UCSB students face concerning academic and social pressures that have led to drug and alcohol use statistics that largely exceed that of the national average.
 
Research shows that the earlier the age at which youth take their first alcoholic drink, the greater the risk of developing alcohol problems. Thus, age at first drink (AFD) is generally considered a powerful predictor of progression to alcohol-related harm. 
 
Taking medication to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in childhood does not affect the risk of substance abuse later in life, according to a new study. Earlier research indicated children who took ADHD drugs had a reduced risk of substance abuse, The New York Times reports.

MGC is pleased to announce the appointment of problem gambling treatment and prevention specialist, Mark Vander Linden, as Director of Research and Problem Gambling.
 
To clarify the various revisions in the American Psychiatric Association's fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) relating to gambling disordersthe National Center for Responsible Gaming (NCRG) authored a white paper, titled "The Evolving Defintion of Pathological Gambling in the DSM-5." APA Considers Potential Internet Gaming Disorder

Has the reclassification of gambling disorder as a addictive behavior in the the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) opened the floodgates to other non-substance based addictions? The American Psychiatric Association (APA) announced yesterday that Internet Gaming Disorder is identified in Section III of the DSM-5 as a condition warranting more clinical research and experience before it might be considered for inclusion in the main book as a formal disorder.

A Primer of DSM-5 Webinar Training   Wednesday, June 26 from 12pm-1:30PM, CTZ with Dr. Donald W. Black.  This workshop is designed to cover the changes and practical implications of the DSM-5. Dr. Black will discuss the history and development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the important changes in the manual. He will also review the 3 important changes in the criteria used in adults.

June 26-28, Kansas City, Missouri

The three-day, multi-state summit features internationally and nationally renowned experts in the fields of problem gambling, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Last year, the conference hosted more than 200 attendees from throughout the country. 

 

6th Annual National Rural Substance Abuse Prevention Conference 

August 7-9, 2013, Lancaster, SC. $150 for the three day event, includes breakfasts and working lunches.  Buy two registrations and get the third for free.  

Prevention of Youth Substance Abuse in Rural Communities is the only national conference that focuses on the unique challenges of prevention from a rural context.  The three day annual conference includes nationally recognized keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and optional evening activities.  The theme of this year's conference will focus on exploring future trends in prevention, including environmental prevention strategies and use of technology.
