Substance Abuse in older adults can be called a silent epidemic.  This full-text article is a bit older, but has great information in it.

As prescription painkillers become more difficult to obtain and abuse, a growing number of people addicted to these drugs are switching to heroin, USA Today reports. The trend is increasingly being seen in the suburbs.
 
A recent report says that the abuse of codeine-containing cough syrup has become rampant, particularly among women in northern Nigeria. What this portends is that substance abuse is silently but steadily developing into a serious problem, especially among northern women. Some have attributed the rampant use of the substance to its availability over the counter.
 
Women are more likely than men to face multiple barriers to accessing substance abuse
treatment and are less likely to seek treatment. Women also tend to seek care in mental health
or primary care settings rather than in specialized treatment programs, which may contribute
to poorer treatment outcomes.  Read more....

Legislature approves adding 5-year ban for problem-gamblers
Iowans who recognize they're addicted to gambling could voluntarily ban themselves from the state's casinos for five years under legislation now headed to Gov. Terry Branstad.   

New $1 billion casino for Brisbane
Treasury Casino will move to a new location in the Brisbane CBD in a billion dollar plan to create "a world class integrated resort" because the current site is "too small".

SLOAN, Iowa - It was after the floodwaters of 2011 receded that the operators of WinnaVegas Casino Resort realized they may need to expand.

From "Pathological Gambling" to "Gambling Disorder:" 

Changes in the DSM-5    April 24th, 1-2pm CST. One of the most anticipated events in the mental health field is the publication of the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in May 2013. Many of the changes have caused great debate and "Pathological Gambling" is no exception with substantial changes in classification, name of the disorder and number of symptoms required for a diagnosis. Are we ready for these changes? Registration available soon!  

 

2013 Risky Business Conference April 30th, Ames, IA

The 2013 conference is the 28th annual conference of professionals, parents, and youth presented by the Youth and Family Development Branch of Youth & Shelter Services, Inc. This one-day training conference brings together youth and adults to develop skills and increase knowledge of youth development and the critical issues confronting youth and the professionals who work with them. This year's theme is "The Social Media Revolution 2.0
