Scientists can use data from Internet searches to learn about unreported side effects from prescription drugs, before they are found by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), The New York Times reports.

Canada now has a national strategy to tackle the escalating prescription drug abuse crisis that has crippled so many families, communities and First Nations.

 

Cocaine Cravings Turned Off and On With Laser Light in Rat Study

Scientists have used laser lights to turn cocaine cravings off and on in a study of rats. The findings suggest new directions for treatment of addiction in humans, according to the researchers from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the University of California, San Francisco.

The influence of expanded gambling opportunities in Iowa on disordered gambling rates
The expansion of gambling opportunities raises some important public health issues. Researchers previously thought that expanded gambling opportunities would lead to increased rates of gambling and gambling problems. A growing body of evidence, however, suggests that the relationship between gambling opportunities and gambling problems is more complicated (LaPlante & Shaffer, 2007).

Zynga dives into Internet gambling, in the UK
Zynga Inc will take the plunge into real-money gambling on Wednesday when it will begin offering poker and casino-style games in Britain in partnership with Bwin.party Digital Entertainment. "ZyngaPlusPoker" and "ZyngaPlusCasino" - available on the Web and as desktop applications to British-based gamblers - will allow Zynga to gauge interest among its core users for online betting on everything from poker to blackjack and roulette.    

Gambling addiction affects more men and women, seduced by growing casino accessibility
The number of casinos across the country is growing, not to mention online gambling, but programs to combat gambling addiction have not kept pace. About 2 million adults meet the criteria for 'pathological gambling,' according to estimates.    

Nearly 100 kids left to roam casino as parents gamble

Nearly 100 children were found wandering by themselves in SkyCity last year, show new statistics which anti-gambling advocates say prove problem gambling is a growing issue.

In most cases, the adults responsible for the children were found in the main gaming floor on pokie machines or at a table game.

From "Pathological Gambling" to "Gambling Disorder:" 

Changes in the DSM-5    April 24th, 1-2pm CST. One of the most anticipated events in the mental health field is the publication of the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in May 2013. Many of the changes have caused great debate and "Pathological Gambling" is no exception with substantial changes in classification, name of the disorder and number of symptoms required for a diagnosis. Are we ready for these changes? Registration available soon!
