Some doctors want stricter rules for prescribing opioids, arguing this could decrease addiction and drug abuse. Others are concerned tougher rules could penalize patients with long-term pain, particularly if the new rules call for opioid treatment only for those in severe pain, rather than moderate pain. This is a personal and subjective call, they say.

  

State Honors Doctor for Efforts to Fight Abuse

A Des Moines doctor is being honored for his efforts to reduce the abuse of prescription medication. Read Press Release here!  

  

Military substance abuse research progresses, doctor says
 Defense Department officials are developing research-based methods to curb substance abuse among service members, their families and veterans, a senior DOD medical official said on March 11.

 

The release of the first issue of a new open access journal - Journal of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.  This deals with the aspects of alcohol, drug and its dependence. The journal publishes papers on psychological and sociological aspects of alcohol and its effects, including biomedical, biochemical, pharmacological, physiological, behavioral actions and clinical research in humans.

Woodbury County: IRGC chair reviews upcoming casino site visits
The chairman of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission said Thursday he looks forward to stepping foot on the four proposed sites for a land-based casino in Woodbury County.

National group critical of Kansas funding of problem gambling addiction programs

Congress in a race with states to pass online gambling law
States racing to legalize online gambling may soon be overtaken by the federal government, as efforts to pass a national bill begin to come together.  

Australia: Act not making 'contribution' to reducing problem gambling

A LAW designed to protect Australia's problem gamblers is failing and may actually be increasing the risk of harm, a review has found.  The Federal Government's final report into the review of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, released on Tuesday, contained 32 recommendations around issues of harm minimisation, consumer protection, deterrence and enforcement of the act, online gaming and gambling, education and advertising.

From "Pathological Gambling" to "Gambling Disorder:" 

Changes in the DSM-5    April 24th, 1-2pm CST. One of the most anticipated events in the mental health field is the publication of the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in May 2013. Many of the changes have caused great debate and "Pathological Gambling" is no exception with substantial changes in classification, name of the disorder and number of symptoms required for a diagnosis. Are we ready for these changes? Registration available soon!
