The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) informed the maker of the opioid addiction treatment Suboxone that it has approved two generic versions of the drug.
 
Middle school students are less likely to think using drugs is bad if their parents told them about their own past substance use, a new study finds. Children whose parents warned them not to use drugs were more likely to avoid them, ABC News reports.

Teenagers with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are significantly more likely to have substance abuse issues and to smoke cigarettes, compared with their peers without a history of the disorder, according to a nationwide study.
 
 SRITA is a Stanford research group which analyzes the effects of tobacco advertising, marketing, and promotion. We have collected over 12,000 tobacco advertisements and digitized them, putting them into a searchable online database. You can access the Searchable Database!

National Problem Gambling Awareness Week!
March 3rd - 9th, 2013!  The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) is pleased to present the National Problem Gambling Awareness Week (NPGAW) campaign, a grassroots public awareness and outreach campaign. The goal of this campaign is to educate the general public, and health care professionals about the warning signs of problem gambling and raise awareness about the help that is available both locally and nationally!

Munson: Casinos' refusal to go smoke-free puzzling
Editorial: None of these casinos, neither the hopefuls nor the existing facilities, has gone smoke-free to gain a competitive edge. Instead, the Iowa gaming industry continues to howl just the opposite, that kicking cigarettes would cost the state as much as $80 million in lost tax revenue and some 1,500 jobs.

International Game Technology (IGT) Chairman Philip Satre, locked in a fight over board seats, said the world's largest slot-machine maker has to invest online because young people don't gamble as much as their parents....  
Building Partnerships to Address Responsible Gaming
At the National Center for Responsible Gaming (NCRG), we place a huge emphasis on developing partnerships toward a common goal, and those essential collaborations help us to fulfill our mission. The NCRG's ambitious agenda for 2013 is an example of striving to build partnerships across all sectors to increase awareness and understanding of gambling disorders and responsible gaming.

Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST) Course   March 4 - March 7, 2013, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM at Camp Dodge. IDPH in collaboration with Midwest Counterdrug Training Center (MCTC), is offering the national CAPT version of Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST). The newly revised curriculum has the most current information available on evidence-based prevention practices and programs. The SAPST includes two parts: a 4-hour online pre-requisite course followed by a 4-day resident training (March 4-7).  Register Here!

From "Pathological Gambling" to "Gambling Disorder:" 

Changes in the DSM-5

April 24th, 1-2pm CST. One of the most anticipated events in the mental health field is the publication of the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in May 2013. Many of the changes have caused great debate and "Pathological Gambling" is no exception with substantial changes in classification, name of the disorder and number of symptoms required for a diagnosis. Are we ready for these changes? Registration available soon!
