Substance Abuse: Noteworthy Articles and Studies

DRUNKOREXIA: Disordered eating goes hand-in-glass with drinking bingesIt's been dubbed 'drunkorexia': Starving oneself to 'save calories' for nights of drinking, or in order to get drunk faster. And it's a growing problem for young women and men alike. Doctors Often Don't Ask Teen Patients About DrinkingMany doctors don't ask their teenage patients about their drinking, a new study finds. A survey of 10th graders found that while more than 80 percent had seen a doctor in the past year, only 54 percent of them were asked about drinking, and 40 percent were advised about the dangers of alcohol. California Tobacco Prevention Program Lowered Health Costs: StudyCalifornia's tobacco prevention program saved $134 billion in health care costs over the last two decades, according to a new study published Wednesday about the smoking control program's impacts in the most populous state. California spent about $2.4 billion from 1989 through 2008 on one of the nation's most aggressive tobacco control programs, including buying up billboards and TV time to run ads against smoking, as well as promoting smoke-free environments and tobacco cessation programs. Synthetic marijuana linked to kidney damageSome people may consider smoking synthetic marijuana be a more harmless alternative, but researchers are warning that it may take a toll on their kidneys. Four case studies have linked the marijuana-alternative drug to kidney damage. The findings appeared in the March 2013 print edition of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Problem Gambling: Noteworthy Articles and Studies

| National Problem Gambling Awareness Week! March 3rd - 9th, 2013! The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) is pleased to present the National Problem Gambling Awareness Week (NPGAW) campaign, a grassroots public awareness and outreach campaign. The goal of this campaign is to educate the general public, and health care professionals about the warning signs of problem gambling and raise awareness about the help that is available both locally and nationally!
Abstract: Gaming machine addiction: the role of avoidance, accessibility and social support. An overarching framework of addiction was used to examine predictors of problem gambling in current electronic gaming machine (EGM) gamblers. Path analysis was used to examine the relationships between antecedent factors (stressors, coping habits, social support), gambling motivations (avoidance, accessibility, social) and gambling behavior.
Potential pathways to problem gambling: The relationships among life stress, gambling motives, and gambling behavior Research suggests that some people might develop addictive behavior through their attempts to escape or avoid experiences associated with stressful life events. Other contributing factors to developing addictive behavior include proximity to and accessibility of potential objects of addiction. This week's WAGER reviews a study that examined how these factors intersect and relate to gambling motivation, frequency and gambling-related problems.
