       ISAIC is MOVING!

The Iowa Substance Abuse Information Center (ISAIC) is moving to our new location the week of February 18th. We are thrilled to have a permanent home in the new Ladd Library (The Westside Branch of the Cedar Rapids Public Library). This new home located at 3750 Williams Blvd SW in Cedar Rapids will house our two excellent Information Specialists (Dixie and Katy), my office, our entire collection of DVD's, Curriculum and Books, AND our 4500 sq foot Clearinghouse that stores our substance abuse, problem gambling and IDPH health materials. This will be the first time that our two main services (collection/staff and Clearinghouse) will be in the same location and we are looking forward to improving the way we serve clients!

During the week we move
THIS WEEK --February 18 - February 22nd, we will need to augment services to ensure we get fully moved and a bit settled. Our Clearinghouse Services should be up and running without any issue during the week. Our toll-free line will be answered by Foundation 2 all week, with smooth access to ISAIC by email if we are needed to answer questions, or address significant issues.

All our media items that are reserved for that week will be shipped the week before as we will not be open for business. If you have an item to return, you can do so on Monday February 25th using our new drive-up return!

I will be checking my email regularly and do my best to address any issues, etc.

Thank you for your patience during this time!

Sincerely,

Emily Blomme

Substance Abuse:
Noteworthy Articles
 and Studies
NYTimes - Part I:  Effective Addiction Treatment
According to recent examinations of treatment programs, most are rooted in outdated methods rather than newer approaches shown in scientific studies to be more effective in helping people achieve and maintain addiction-free lives. People typically do more research when shopping for a new car than when seeking treatment for addiction.

NYTimes - Part 2: Getting the Right Addiction Treatment

As the son of Judith and Bill Moyers, successful parents who watched helplessly during a 15-year pursuit of oblivion through alcohol and drugs, William Moyers said his near-fatal battle with addiction demonstrates that this "illness of the mind, body and spirit" has no respect for status or opportunity. "My parents raised me to become anything I wanted, but when it came to this chronic incurable illness, I couldn't get on top of it by myself," he said in an interview. He finally emerged from his drug-induced nadir when he gave up "trying to do it my way" and instead listened to professional therapists and assumed responsibility for his behavior.

Colorado Legislature Gears Up to Debate Drugged Driving Limits

The Colorado legislature is gearing up to debate where to set the limit on how much marijuana can be in a person's system before they are considered to be driving under the influence.

Panel prods FDA to restrict hydrocodone, ingredient in prescription painkillers

An advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration voted 19-10 to recommend placing tighter restrictions on hydrocodone, an ingredient found in popular prescription drugs including Vicodin, Norco and Lortab. If the panel's advice is adopted by FDA, it would put hydrocodone on par with prescription painkillers like oxycodone, morphine, and methadone -- drugs with high abuse potential that can lead to severe physical dependence

Gambling Problems Among College Students
Paradigm Volume 17, No 2: Article on pg 14-17

College students are in transition from adolescence to adulthood. This period is important developmentally and marked by increasing responsibility, independence, exploration, and identity formation (Arnett, 2000)

Unfortunately, engagement in risky behaviors also increases during this time, and gambling is one such behavior.

Beyond the Casino Floor: Economic Impacts of the Commercial Casino Industry

The commercial casino industry in the U.S. has without question undergone significant growth over the last 25 years. During this time, the industry has gone from operating only in Nevada and Atlantic City, New Jersey to operating 566 casinos in 22 states in 2010. Coinciding with this growth, large portions of the industry have also undergone an evolutionary shift that has led to an increased emphasis being placed on a wide range of entertainment and recreational options beyond the casino floor.

Can Believing In Luck Actually Make You Lucky?

We have long known that lucky charms and superstitious rituals provide psychological comfort to those hoping to win the lottery, knock in a winning run, or get an A on a calculus exam, but now there is good evidence that our superstitions actually work -- not through magic but through psychology. Recent research suggests that believing in magic can bring you real benefits.

Curious About Online Poker? Get Updates Here!

Online poker is one of the hottest topics in today's gaming industry. Everyone seems to be talking about it -- politicians, regulators, gaming companies, the media and players -- but where can you get all the information about the issue that you need? The AGA has created the Online Poker Headquarters on its website with links to videos, opinion pieces, white papers and background about the issue, along with information about how you can get involved in the effort to pass federal legislation to allow states to legalize and regulate online poker.
