| Interesting Photos from LIFE: America's War on Drugs, 1969 In October 1969, LIFE ran a cover story under the banner: MARIJUANA: At Least 12 Million American Have Now Tried It. Are penalties too severe? Should it be legalized . The most riveting element of the feature in that issue of LIFE was a series of pictures by photographer Co Rentmester made at various points along the U.S.-Mexican border, in which he chronicled the efforts of U.S. Customs agents to stem the flow of (primarily) pot into the States through a program dubbed "Operation Intercept."
Drug Abuse Impairs Sexual Performance in Men Even After Rehabilitation A new article reveals that alcohol is the drug that most affects sexual arousal (erectile capacity). In addition, the researchers observed that men did not improve their sexual performance when they stopped drinking alcohol. The results of this study have been published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
New York Police Department to Use Decoy Pill Bottles to Track Painkiller Thieves The New York Police Department has announced it will put decoy pill bottles with tracking devices on pharmacy shelves, in an effort to track stolen painkillers. The fake bottles will appear to contain oxycodone, The New York Times reports. The bottles will not actually contain painkillers, but will have a GPS device.
Prescription Drug Abuse; Drug Makers Must Deter Opioid Abusers: FDA United States Food and Drug Administration has issued a draft guidance letter that should help the pharmaceutical industry to develop new formulations of opioid drugs, focusing on abuse deterrent formulations of popular opioid-based drugs.
Sharp rise in emergency department visits involving ADHD medications A new report shows that the number of emergency department visits involving attention deficit /hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) stimulant medications more than doubled from 13,379 visits in 2005 to 31,244 in 2010. The study by SAMHSA finds that the greatest rates of increase in emergency department visits involving ADHD stimulant medications occurred among those aged 18 and older, while the level among those under 18 remained largely unchanged during this period.

Iowa: Flood Damaged Casino Re-Opens The Blackbird Bend Casino was right in the middle of the flooding in 2011. eighteen months after the flood, the casino in Onawa, IA has re-opened.

CollegeGambling.org, a free online resource of the National Center for Responsible Gaming, includes the latest research and resources designed to help college students, parents and university administrators learn more about this issue.
NCRG Awards $870,000 for Gambling Disorder Research in 2012 Earlier this month, the NCRG announced it awarded more than $870,000 in 2012 to support 10 new research projects that will help to improve methods of diagnosis, intervention, treatment and prevention of gambling disorders.
Former Iowa casino executive invests in Hard Rock Sioux City project The developers of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Sioux City have secured up to $35 million in financing from an entity controlled by former Iowa casino executive M. Brent Stevens.The investment strengthens Hard Rock's application for a state gaming license by putting more equity into the $118.5 million project and sharply lowering the financing costs.

Online Course: UC San Diego -- Smoking Cessation and Behavioral Health The purpose of this course is to provide mental health and substance use disorder providers and counselors with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to assess and treat tobacco dependence in smokers with co-occurring psychiatric and/or addictive disorders. This activity is presented online through an audio presentation with synchronized slides and is 2 hours in length.
Ethics in the Workplace by Eric Pruess, February 27, 2013 - 1:00-4:15 pm at the IBC Office. Cost is $30. By attending this training, you will explore individual responsibility in having integrity-based business practices, learn strategies to seize the opportunities to model the behaviors we expect of others, and learn about the "Universal Ethics Principle," the "Big 4" and 40 keys to integrity-based business practices.
Financial Issues for Problem Gamblers Webinar- Thursday, February 28, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. The webinar will begin with a brief overview of problem gambling and the unique relationship that problem gamblers have with gambling. Money is the insatiable drug that feeds the gambler's addiction. We will continue with discussing values and behaviors regarding money; understanding relationships with money; and tools used to establish budgets and debt repayment plans.
