SAMHSA: Emergency Dept. Visits Involving Energy Drinks: A Continuing Public Health Concern
The number of emergency department (ED) visits involving energy drinks doubled from 10,068 visits in
2007 to 20,783 visits in 2011.  In 2011, more than half of energy drink-related ED visits involved energy drinks only (58 percent), and the remaining 42 percent involved other drugs.

Tobacco Companies Move into E-Cigarette Business
Tobacco manufacturers are moving into the manufacture and sale of electronic cigarettes, according to CNBC. The business, which brought in $400 million to $500 million in sales in 2012, is expected to at least double this year, one expert predicts.

"Intoxication" is the subject of the current issue of Lapham's Quarterly
Lapham's Quarterly embodies the belief that history is the root of all education, scientific and literary as well as political and economic. While most causes of accidental death are on the decline, drug-related deaths are increasing. This is due in part to the increase of deaths caused by prescription pain medication, like Vicodin or OxyContin. A Los Angeles Times investigative series looks at how doctors are contributing to the trend.

Iowa Gambling Treatment Outcomes System: Special Report

This report of the Iowa Gambling Treatment Outcomes (IGTO) System presents longitudinal findings based on paired-samples questionnaire data from July 2007 through May 2012.  The purpose of the current report is to provide a longitudinal analysis of several outcome measures for respondents who completed problem gambling treatment in programs funded by the IDPH Office of Problem Gambling Treatment and Prevention.

n the spirit of end-of-the-year highlights lists, the NCRG staff perused the approximately 500 peer-reviewed publications released to determine the most noteworthy studies in the field of gambling disorders and addiction from 2012.

New!  Online Course: UC San Diego -- Smoking Cessation and Behavioral Health The purpose of this course is to provide mental health and substance use disorder providers and counselors with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to assess and treat tobacco dependence in smokers with co-occurring psychiatric and/or addictive disorders.  This activity is presented online through an audio presentation with synchronized slides and is 2 hours in length.

 

Motivational Interviewing (MI) for Non--Clinicians  This 3-session webinar training is designed for non-clinicians in treatment settings where Motivational Interviewing is being implemented. Click above for more information and to register!  Dates include:

a free online course specifically designed for individuals who want to learn more about the issues related to women's substance use, treatment, and recovery experiences, as well as effective interventions for women. This 12-hour, self-paced course.  The course is available for FREE.
 
Webinar: Prevention Connection: Recognizing Depression & Substance Abuse in Adolescents This previously recorded webinar focuses on the complexities of adolescent depression, the risks of co-occurrence of substance abuse, and how early identification can have a positive impact and potentially prevent serious co-morbidities.

Problem Gambling 101 -- Online 25 minute training accessible to Iowa providers in partnership with the Indiana Problem Gambling Treatment Resource Network

Clinical Supervision for Problem Gambling Treatment Providers
