Navy Warns Sailors about Bath Salts
The Navy came out with a PSA on Bath Salts after seeing an increase in the use of synthetic drugs.

Vital Signs: Binge Drinking Among Women and High School Girls - United States, 2011
New Report out by the Center for Disease Control:  Binge drinking is reported by one in eight U.S. adult women and one in five high school girls. Women who binge drink tend to do so frequently and with high intensity. Most high school girls who reported current alcohol use also reported binge drinking.

Trends in Adolescent Substance Use and Perception of Risk from Substance Use
SAMHSA - The National Survey on Drug Use and Health report. The percentage of adolescents
aged 12 to 17 who perceived great risk from having five or more alcoholic drinks once or twice a week increased from 38.2 percent in 2002 to 40.7 percent in 2011; during the same period, the rate of binge alcohol use among adolescents decreased from 10.7 to 7.4 percent.

Drug Companies Want Ban on Generic Painkillers, Arguing Safety is at Stake
Drug companies that manufacture the painkillers OxyContin and Opana are trying to block generic drug makers' efforts to produce cheaper versions of the drugs. They argue these newer drugs will not have the tamper-resistant designs used in making the brand-name pills, according to The New York Times.

AGA releases Beyond the Casino Floor: A comprehensive economic impact study
To take a true measure of the direct, indirect and induced impacts of every aspect of the commercial casino industry, the AGA contracted with The Brattle Group, an economic analysis firm based in Washington, D.C., to conduct the largest and most comprehensive study of the total impact of the commercial casino industry in nearly 15 years.

Linn County casino vote could come as soon as March

The investment group pushing a Linn County gaming and entertainment venue says it has obtained enough signatures to bring the issue to vote sooner than expected.

The Cedar Rapids Development Group, led by investor Steve Gray, turned in more than 16 thousand signatures Tuesday morning to the Linn County Board of Supervisors- just short of 12 thousand signatures needed in Linn County to bring about a special election.

 

Iowa Lottery Looks to Future After Big Year 

Lottery sales in Iowa have been through the roof. Proceeds in the current budget year are up more than 10 percent over the same period last year and 27 percent over the year before that.

So while there are no immediate plans to change how and where residents can play the lottery in Iowa, officials expect there will be in the near future.

New!  Online Course: UC San Diego -- Smoking Cessation and Behavioral Health The purpose of this course is to provide mental health and substance use disorder providers and counselors with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to assess and treat tobacco dependence in smokers with co-occurring psychiatric and/or addictive disorders.  This activity is presented online through an audio presentation with synchronized slides and is 2 hours in length.

 

The Effects of PTSD on Recovery by Larry Wohlgemuth,  January 18, 2013 - 1:00-4:15 pm at the IBC Office.  Cost is $30.  After attending this training, you will be able to know the symptoms and effects of PTSD, potentially identfiy people with PTSD and understand the purpose and findings of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACES).  

 

Motivational Interviewing (MI) for Non--Clinicians  This 3-session webinar training is designed for non-clinicians in treatment settings where Motivational Interviewing is being implemented. Click above for more information and to register!  Dates include:

Ethics in the Workplace by Eric Pruess, February 27, 2013 - 1:00-4:15 pm at the IBC Office.  Cost is $30. By attending this training, you will explore individual responsibility in having integrity-based business practices, learn strategies to seize the opportunities to model the behaviors we expect of others, and learn about the "Universal Ethics Principle," the "Big 4" and 40 keys to integrity-based business practices.   

 

Introduction to Women and Substance Use Disorders (at site, scroll down)
a free online course specifically designed for individuals who want to learn more about the issues related to women's substance use, treatment, and recovery experiences, as well as effective interventions for women. This 12-hour, self-paced course.  The course is available for FREE.
 
Webinar: Prevention Connection: Recognizing Depression & Substance Abuse in Adolescents This previously recorded webinar focuses on the complexities of adolescent depression, the risks of co-occurrence of substance abuse, and how early identification can have a positive impact and potentially prevent serious co-morbidities.

Problem Gambling 101 -- Online 25 minute training accessible to Iowa providers in partnership with the Indiana Problem Gambling Treatment Resource Network
