Gamblers interpret near-misses as frustrating losses rather than near wins, according to new research which sheds light on the compulsive nature of betting. This sense of frustration from just losing out encourages the gambler to bet again, which in turn may contribute to addictive gambling behavior, the researchers say. | Number of Teens Who Drink and Drive Fell 54 Percent Since 1991 The number of U.S. teens who drink and drive has decreased 54 percent since 1991, according to a new government report. Last year, 90 percent of high school students 16 and older said they don't drink and drive.

Commentary: Affordable Care Act Could Benefit Treatment of Co-Occurring Disorders According to SAMHSA, integrated treatment or treatment that addresses mental and substance use conditions at the same time is associated with lower costs and better outcomes such as reduced substance use, improved psychiatric symptoms and functioning, decreased hospitalization, increased housing stability, fewer arrests and improved quality of life.
Drinking and substance abuse among US women on the rise According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, about six million women are dependent on alcohol in the U.S. and about 2.6 million women have substance abuse issues.
