Product Spotlight: AV-20D - Good Things Come In Small Packages
OK, you've got to stick a power amplifier in an weird location due to a) size and power restrictions b) distance from speakers.  Well, the good news is TOA's new AV-20D Micro Amp will not only go where many other amps will not, but actually do what many others will not. Firstly, this "micro-miracle" is designed around a new Class D circuit (similar to technology incorporated in the TOA DA Series Amplifiers), owing to its small size and high-efficiency.

The output power is 20W x 2 at 4 Ohms and can be bridged for a total of 40W at 8 Ohms, making it ideal for powering anywhere from 1-4 small speakers-great for most single room applications. The AV-20D can also handle a range of signal sources, with a rear panel compliment of L&R balanced terminal blocks (transformer isolated), plus RCA and TRS mini-jack, each with a sensitivity selection switch, allowing it to accommodate a range of levels.  In addition to front panel adjustment, remote volume control can be accomplished through a rear port and there is a breaker reset button for when the amp detects a fault condition. Bass and Treble tone controls can be found on the front panel, along with input signal present and peak overload LED indicators.

Most importantly, the AV-20D is UL-2043 plenum-rated and carries Energy Star 2.0 certification (equipped with an auto power shut-off/standby power circuit). This helps reduce electricity consumption and can represent a sizable power-cost savings, especially where many of these are being used. A supplied AC power plate adapter allows the IEC connection to be converted for use with a metal power conduit, usually required by code. It's important to note that many other "micro" amps, which employ external power supplies ("wall-warts" or "line-lumps") cannot be installed in air-handling plenum spaces.

The AV-20D's compact size and high-efficiency makes it ideal for use in "hang & bang" AV presentation systems in corporate boardrooms and other meeting spaces. The AV-20D is also suited for use in kiosks and POS displays or for signage applications, since it also generates little heat. If needed the AV-20D may also be single or dual rack-mounted with the optional MB-AV20RM Rack kit. Oh, and if reliability is your concern, the AV-20D carries TOAs 5-year Audio Product Warranty. Tech Tip: Using the AV-20D Beyond the Classroom
By Josh Srago, CTS
AV-20D For those of you unfamiliar with the AV-20D, take a look at the Product Spotlight above and you can see the specs of TOA's first micro amplifier.  One of the key applications for an amplifier like this is in the classroom environments but there are a few other ways that this amplifier can ease possible installations and help cut some costs.

Looking at a multi-zone system recently, I found that they had the need for a single ceiling speaker in a small area that was pretty remote from the other zones in the system.  So the question came, how are we going to get sound to that area?  While that's not a difficult question to resolve with an amplifier in a rack and then running cable to that unit, because it was a zone unto itself we would have to take up rack space and add a more expensive unit to the system to accomplish this.  However, using an AV-20D in bridged mode, we can just run the shielded twisted pair cable right to the unit which could be sitting above the ceiling directly next to one of the TOA F-Series Ceiling speakers set to an 8 ohm tap selection.
That might seem a little complex for a single speaker in some of these multi-zone systems, but it's the concept to focus on.  Think about a larger office building that might have several small conference rooms in need of an audio system.  As opposed to designing an individual system for each room, you can centralize the mixer/DSP solution and then provide a local amplifier with a simple 10k ohm potentiometer for volume control in each room.

For more information on the AV-20D or its possible uses, please reach out and contact your local TOA Sales Rep or Sales Manager, or you can reach the Product Support Group at 800-733-4748 from 8 am to 8 pm EST.
