Bishop's Blog: A Call for Common Witness
on Mother's Day

Thus says the Lord: A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.
-Jeremiah 30:15

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I; send me.'

-Isaiah 6:8

In less than a month, we will celebrate Mother's Day and collectively spend an estimated $14 billion on flowers and other gifts. In full disclosure, I plan on sending my mother flowers and would be pleased to receive them from my sons. But no one needs our support and attention on Mother's Day as much as those mothers who live with the daily fear of losing their children.

Whenever a child, even an adult child, enters our collective consciousness because of the violence perpetrated upon them, we hear an anguished mother's (and father's) cry. Among them, Judy Scott, Gwenn Carr, and Sabrina Fulton have pleaded with us to remember their sons-Walter, Eric, and Trayvon--and to stand up for all children.

"Six years ago, when I took on the position of Youth Minister at Grace Episcopal Church, I didn't have the slightest idea of where to begin. "Among the many delights of my work in the United Methodist Church is offering support to families. "When I was a little girl growing up in Virginia, I expected spring but did not appreciate it fully.
