The Rev. Canon Jan Cope in Alaska
|
In August my husband, John, and I went to Alaska for our vacation-a place we had never been and had heard so much about. We both love nature and exploring new places so this seemed like a good choice. We were prepared to see wildlife, beautiful mountains, streams and rivers, and exquisite sunrises and sunsets. What I was wholly unprepared for was encountering the sheer magnitude and awesomeness of our Creator as we cruised through Glacier Bay National Park.
Glacier Bay is comprised of 3.3 million acres of mountains, glaciers, forests and waterways. When we entered the bay in the early morning, it was Read more...

Bishop's Blog: Bishop John Walker
|
|

There once a man sent from God whose name was John... -John 1:6
In 1977 John Thomas Walker addressed the Diocese of Washington as he prepared to assume leadership as Diocesan Bishop. To be sure, Walker's leadership was already well-established. He had served at Canon for Urban Affairs at Washington National Cathedral since 1966 and as Bishop Suffragan (assisting bishop) since 1971. The Diocese elected him again in 1976 as the designated successor of Bishop William Creighton. He served as our bishop until he died, too soon, in 1989. Read more...

Digital Ministry Field Notes:
Dedicating a parish resource center
By Kyle Oliver on Key Resources, a blog from the Center for the Ministry of Teaching at Virginia Theological Seminary
It had been more than a year since I met with Peter Antoci, one of St. Columba's associate rectors, who wanted to start thinking about supplementing the parish library with online faith formation resources. In the intervening months, Peter and the adult formation committee at St. Columba's have been hard at work discerning the kinds of resources that might be helpful for members of the church Read more...

Preaching Conference
The Diocese of Washington and the Washington Episcopal Clergy Association, in conjunction with the Preaching Foundation will host a preaching conference, featuring renown homilist, the Reverend Dr. James Forbes, Senior Minister Emeritus of The Riverside Church, NY and President of the Healing of the Nations Foundation. The preaching conference on September 23 will begin at 9am, and end by 3pm. There will be plenary and breakout sessions. It is our hope that preaching colleague groups will be formed as a result of the good work begun at the conference. There is no fee for this conference, but lunch will be served and space is limited, so participants must register by September 16, 2014 by emailing the Rev. Canon Paula Clark.
Diocesan Constitution Hearing
The Committee on the Constitution and Canons has been working on a Restatement of the entire Constitution of the Diocese, retaining the original intent with a minimum of policy changes, and which will provide for more transparent, modern, and practical administration and good governance, in particular, the simplification for administering clerical voting rights. The Diocesan Council and the Standing Committee have already had the opportunity to review and discuss all of this. We would now like to open this up to the rest of the Diocese for review, questions and comments. An open hearing is scheduled for September 24 at 7pm at Church House. Materials (including a summary) are available on the website.
Celebration of Latino Ministries
The annual Celebration of Latino Ministries will take place on September 27th in the Great Hall of St. Paul's Rock Creek Parish at 6 p.m. Our theme this year is Compartiendo el Camino/Share the Journey. Our focus will be the unaccompanied minor children arriving in our area. The evening will be welcoming and bilingual beginning with a service of praise and prayer and hymns that all can sing. We will hear stories of some of the children who have made this journey and we will find out how we can help accompany and assist families in this difficult time. There will be small group opportunities for personal sharing of experiences of welcome in our lives and what it means to us as Christians. Plenty of tamales, pupusas and empanadas for everybody. And of course you are invited to dance to the ritmo latino. You are cordially invited and warmly welcomed.
Regional Assemblies
Wardens (this is the one time you can vote), Convention Delegates and Clergy should plan on attending their Regional Assembly. We are actively looking for nominations for all elective offices. For dates, location, and nomination procedures, please go to our website.
