Bishop's Blog: Have Fun. Bring a Friend.

I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. - John 15:11

One of the churches I admire and try to learn from, the National Community Church in Washington DC, has as its summer small group theme: Have Fun. Bring a Friend. Their website states:

We believe that God wants us to enjoy Him and the good things He has given us, so we've created a bunch of groups designed to help us do just that. We've got everything from sports teams and backyard barbecues to movie screenings and art collaboratives. Summer groups kick off June 1, so now is the perfect time to find a group. For more info or to join, contact the leader. And don't just sign up. Have fun, and bring a friend.
The Church Isn't Dying, Christendom Is

The Rev. Jason Cox, Associate Rector for Youth Ministries at St. Columba's

I try to keep a tight lid on my email inbox, but spam still gets through. This was a subject line from an email I received this week: "Is Increasing Membership in 2014 a Goal?" Over at HuffPost Religion, I saw "Why nobody wants to go to church anymore.Episcopal Cafe led me to "The Church must die so Christianity can live." And "What needs to die in the Church" from Dirty Sexy Ministry has been reposted on my Facebook wall so many times I lost count.

101 Eagle Scouts
On June 1, Boy Scout Troop 1444, chartered since 1966 by Transfiguration Parish, held a Court of Honor to celebrate the first 101 Eagle Scouts of the Troop. Eagle Scout Jack McNerney, the first Eagle Scout of the Troop, received his Eagle in 1972, and Tim Lidiak, Eagle number 101, received his award in March 2014. The Court of Honor was attended by 23 of the Eagles, who now live all over the country. Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett dropped in to congratulate the Troop and Senator Karen Montgomery provided a citation from the Maryland General Assembly to commemorate the event.
