Salvation: A New Way of Living

Salvation. Marcus Borg calls this word "a loaded word."  Author Kathleen Norris calls it one of her "scary words"-included in a group of words like "incarnation," "revelation," "atonement," etc.

I am familiar with the loaded nature of the word "salvation" and the fear it invokes. As the oldest child of a southern Baptist minister, I have heard about salvation all of my life. The importance of accepting Jesus Christ as my Savior and being saved-that is, going to heaven when I die and not to the fires of hell-was stressed over and over. I found myself wondering about this seemingly bi-polar God who was full of love one moment, and in another, full of wrath and judgment. Was God really like this? Read more...
Bishop's Blog: Emptiness

"Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself..." -Philippians:2:5-7

I don't generally use the word "empty" to describe a positive state of being. When I say that I'm running on empty, for example, it means that I have depleted my resources and have little to offer; or if I suggest that someone has made an empty promise, I distrust that person's truthfulness or capacity to be true to his or her word. Read more...

Equipping the Saints Workshops

Window Thumb At Convention, Bishop Mariann proposed that the Diocesan focus in the coming years be one of strengthening and equipping parishes throughout the diocese for ministry. This multi-year process began at Convention with the plenary and workshops. Nearly all those who attended the Convention workshops expressed interest in further conversation. As way to begin, we will offer continuing workshops that are based on, but will go slightly deeper than, the Convention sessions. Workshop leaders commit to hosting the sessions, demand permitting. Registration is online and once ten people sign up for a workshop, the leader will poll registrants to determine a session date. Once the workshop date is established, we will advertise it so that others might join. Read Bishop Mariann's letter outlining initiatives for the coming year and register for the workshops
