The Economic Impact of Events
by Harold Pacheco (hpacheco@stalbert.ca)

Red Bull's Crashed Ice event in Edmonton generated more than 70,000 attendees on March 14. While smaller than the provincial capital, St. Albert is no stranger to hosting great community events. Our community has hosted high-profile sports events such as the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, and the Alberta Winter Games, as well as non-sports related events such as the ever-popular Rock N'August and the St. Albert Farmers' Market which is the largest in Western Canada.

Last year, St. Albert also witnessed the inaugural openings of Eek! Comic and Pop Culture Festival and Dig In! Horticulinary Festival. And in 2015, we will see encores of these events, as well as new ones such as Seven Music Festival.

Not only do these events help raise the profile of St. Albert, but on average, they generate about $100 - $300 per attendee, and help stimulate spending in the region. Our Major Event Economic Impact Report released last year has more in-depth information on the financial significance of our local events. You can read the full report here.

If you're looking to start a new event or enhance your current one, now is the time to do it! The City of St. Albert provides a Significant Event Stimulus Fund for successful applicants that can act as "seed money" for your event. Learn more about the program (and its future intake dates) on the Event Stimulus webpage.

Maintaining a Presence at Community Events

by Nicole Liesner (nliesner@stalbert.ca

St. Albert's array of community activities provides excellent opportunities to businesses to get involved and interact directly with potential customers or clients. Businesses should always look for new ways to engage with their customer base. Engaging in local events can make those efforts even simpler.

Here are a few reasons why you should think about getting your business involved:

  1. High ROI. Most successful events have built-in attendance from year to year enabling you to utilize their audience. Some events have specific aspects targeted to the business community through booth rentals or kiosks. Depending on the type of event, they can be very reasonably priced comparatively to the business they will yield for you.

  2. Brand Recognition. The more you are out and about the more people can say "hey! I know that logo." If collaborating officially through a booth or kiosk doesn't seem like the right direction for you business, attending and wearing corporate gear can be another great way to market your services. Corporate gear can be a great conversation started-who knows what will come from it!

  3. Image Building. Why not get a corporate team together for a race walk or fundraising event? It's a double-whammy: you are getting your branding out there for people to recognize at the same time as demonstrating you are socially aware and are invested the local community. More and more, people are looking for companies that demonstrate social responsibility. (Plus, this could be a creative and fun team building activity for your staff!)
For a list of events in St. Albert, take a look at the Community Events Calendar on our website.

Food Truck Pilot Project Ready to Roll

Following recent public consultation around guidelines for mobile vendors, the City of St. Albert has developed rules that will be in place this summer for food trucks on City property as part of a pilot project. The results of the public consultation, which included an online survey, meetings with Chamber of Commerce and Perron District businesses and input from mobile vendors, were presented at the March 23 Council meeting.

They allow food trucks in four sites across St. Albert on a first-come, first-served basis: Lacombe Lake Park, the Log Cabin, Tache Street and the parking lot of St. Albert Place. The guidelines provide clearer detail on vendor requirements and exceptions.

You can view the full Press Release here.

For more info on Mobile Food Vendors and the newly released guidelines, visit our Mobile Food Vendor webpage.

Gretzky Hockey School Coming to St. Albert

Ty Gretzky, son of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, will be bringing The Gretzky Hockey School to Servus Credit Union Place in St. Albert in the summer of 2015.

Founded in 2014 by Ty Gretzky and Eric Kleineck, the Gretzky Hockey School was created to give hockey players a rare opportunity to learn the "Gretzky Hockey Philosophy," the same instruction Walter Gretzky gave Wayne and his other children about the great game of hockey.

"We are extremely excited about bringing the Gretzky Hockey School to the City of St. Albert," says Ty Gretzky (in November's press release). "St. Albert has a storied history of producing some of the best players to ever play the game. The five days in July will be a fun and rewarding experience for everyone."

Spots are filling up quickly. For more information, and to register, visit the Gretzky School website.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT ON... Wheelz

Sean Danchuk, owner of Wheelz Inc., is excited to bring a unique new business to the heart of Downtown; "We're a scooter shop- we sell scooters, scooter apparel and accessories, and there is nothing in the Edmonton area like us, period." A father himself, Sean's business is about more than selling scooters to kids; "we want to grow with the kids as they get older; we can help them build and teach them how to use different tools to fix their own scooters."

Sean is also quick to point out that Wheelz aligns well with St Albert's value of living  active lifestyles; "I think we're going in the right direction of the young vibe- having some fresh businesses down here geared towards young families and physical activity. We have bike paths that make it easy to go for a walk, go for a cruise, do some outdoor shopping." As a lifelong resident of St Albert, it's easy for Shawn to talk about the factors that make St Albert stand apart from other communities; "We're a city, but we have a small-town attitude. You always see someone you know and no one is afraid to say 'hi.' Being close to Edmonton, we get all the big city benefits but still have our small town."

Commenting on St Albert's business community, Sean is happy to be a part of a tight-nit crew; "I've had opportunities to talk to downtown business owners, and it's a great group of people focused on building this area." Sean is also excited about Downtown's future: "it excites me because there's been a lot of facelifts to the buildings- it doesn't feel old and stagnant, and there's a lot of new businesses down here that are really geared on changing the Perron District and want to have a "fresh" kind of Whyte Ave vibe in our community."

Most of all, Sean is looking forward to summer and what it holds for Wheelz; "The Farmer's market is awesome and brings a lot to downtown. It's all about summer down here- the summer vibe."
