2013 Beautification Programblooms

Don't forget that your business can take advantage of the City's   Beautification Program. This financial incentive can be used for beautification, perpendicular signage, permanent street furniture and bike racks.   The City will reimburse 50% of your approved expenses up to a maximum of $2500 in each category. This program is available for all storefront businesses in St. Albert with a valid business license.

Botanical Beautification - Summer beautification may be in the form of a planter, a hanging basket or a garden area. Pre-approval of a botanical beautification idea is required if it is not a planter, hanging basket or a garden area.

Perpendicular Signage - Signs placed perpendicular to the building allow drivers and pedestrians to read them easily, even from a distance. Perpendicular (blade) signs are seen ten times more frequently than façade-mounted signs. Blade signs should be decorative and should fit the architecture of your building and the ambiance of the city. (Applicable to Perron District only).

Bike Racks - The City of St. Albert invites you to "Cultivate Life" by installing an artistic bike rack in the front or in the back of your business. Pre-approval of this element will be required

Street Furniture - Permanent street furniture adds to the ambiance of an area and encourages people to stay longer. Street furniture that reinforces the botanical arts brand will be considered for the program. Pre-approval of this element will be required.

Petunia Planters and Adopt a Barrel - The planters will contain Cherry Pink Tidal Wave Petunias. This petunia was selected for its growth and vibrancy of colour and because they are the official flower of St. Albert. If you would like to have even more beautification around your business, you can purchase a barrel for one of your neighbours and a note will be sent to that business indicating that a barrel has been purchased for them by you. Any barrels purchased through the adopt-a-barrel program are eligible for the cost sharing but are not considered part of your own business' $2500 per element limit. (Note: these planters are available through Hole's Greenhouse and Garden. An order form can be downloaded from our website).

General beautification can be ordered from any supplier of your choice. For more information and the rebate forms, please visit www.cultivatebusiness.ca.

Business Health Challenge #2

There are literally dozens of ratios and analysis tools a bank or financial planner would use to determine the health of your business. These can be daunting for us non-financial people. We're going to look at three ratios and why they're important for you to understand. Your Challenge for May is to complete the following 3 ratios and compare them to your industry average. You will need to dig out your most current balance sheet and income statement.

First of all, why care about these mathematic exercises? Well they help you see if your business is healthy. They can help you see areas of weakness so that you can address the issue before it becomes a bigger problem.

Current Ratio

Current Assets/Current Liabilities

This tool shows whether or not you have enough resources to pay all your bills over the next 12 months. A healthy business will have a ratio greater than 1:1. If you feel your ratio is too low, you can try to pay off debt or put profits back into your business.

Debt Ratio

Total Debt/Total Assets

This ratio show how much debt you're carrying for every dollar of assets. Healthy business would have less than 1:1. Again to be healthier, reduce debt or increase your assets without taking on more debt. Perhaps you can sell unnecessary equipment or improve sales.

Profit Margin

Net income/Sales

Profit margin is something you're probably familiar with; it's the profit you're generating for every dollar in sales. Healthy profit margins vary from industry to industry. Generally the higher the percentage, the healthier your business is. To ensure healthy profit, you can increase your prices be sure to stay competitive or perhaps by working with your suppliers you can lower your costs.

Once you have figured out your numbers, it's good to see how you compare to the other businesses in your industry. There are several places that you can find industry averages but Industry Canada and BDC have some great reports and calculators you can use. Try them out this month and see how healthy your business is.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT ON... Target Canada

This month I was able to touch base with Tamar Nersesian, Public Relations for Target Canada. She shared some great information about Target and their plans for Canada, including St. Albert. Our local store opening at St. Albert Centre in May is one of 124 locations opening across Canada this year.

Their goal is to ensure that the shopping experience offered to Canadian guests is as similar to the US shopping experience as possible while being aware of the unique wants and needs.

For those not familiar with the brand, Target is known for its innovative designer partnerships, and assortment of stylish, quality products. Since opening its first stores in 1962, Target has set itself apart from other retailers by offering great design at affordable prices. They plan to extend their great design partnerships within Canada, including ongoing partnerships with Nate Berkus, Sonia Kashuk, Giada De Laurentiis and Shaun White, as well as a limited time only collection with Kate Young and Roots Outfitters for Target.

Target markets to moms, ensuring they have everything they need at a one-stop shop. Tamar mentioned that Target Canada is looking forward to getting to know Canadian moms and other guests as they establish themselves in the market.

At Target, community giving is a cornerstone of the company and they will continue their legacy of giving in Canada. Since its early days, Target has given 5 percent of its profits to communities. Tamar said, "As the company expands its presence across the country, we are excited to extend our legacy of giving, long history of being a good neighbour and active engagement with local and national partners to help build safer and healthier communities".

Target stores in Canada feature the very best that Target has to offer and reflects the latest thinking on store layout, fixtures and design. Also, Target Canada stores will be among their most sustainable collection of stores to date, as they seek LEED certification for all Canadian stores opening in 2013. The stores feature bright lighting, wide aisles and colourful signing, as well as a 'racetrack' aisle that helps guests shop around the store efficiently.

Watch for the grand opening in May, 2013.
