Grade 6 students enjoy Outdoor Education at Camp Hamilton this week.

Dear Families,

It is so quiet here in the main school building this week. I visited the sixth graders at Environmental Science Camp yesterday and wished I could stay. I yearned to be out on the lake with the canoeing group or off on the hike to see the beautiful view from the top of the hill. I delighted in the teamwork as the students headed up the climbing wall assisted by their belay groups and I wanted to learn with the group studying the animal pelts. The eighth graders are at the University of Virginia and Monticello today. Tomorrow they head to Gettysburg, where they will recite the Gettysburg Address on location. What an experience!   I reiterate how grateful I am to the teachers and chaperones who give up days and nights to make these opportunities possible for our students.

Our mission calls on us to be a community and to prepare our students for leadership and service to others. Here are two examples where we are living this mission:

We have many needy families in our Greenwood neighborhood.  Each week, St. Vincent de Paul members are called out to help folks and each time they bring a bag or two of food with them. The food pantry will run out during summer; they need our help. The seventh grade leadership team is organizing a food drive. Would you please send next week with your child a canned or dried food item. We welcome packets of rice, lentils, cereals, pastas, canned beans, vegetables, fruits, etc.

A group of enterprising fifth grade students want to help restock the library with new books. They are leading a used book sale. Send in the books your children have finished and on May 27 at 3pm we will have a used book sale in the courtyard. The children can buy a book for $1.

I am so glad to see the value the students place on stewardship and service. We also have students making clothes and bookmarks to send to the children in Kenya.   Well done, parents. Encourage this local and global awareness and love of others in your children.

Have you done your homework? I thank those of you who completed the survey. We need your thoughts, well-founded opinions and evaluations as we set about making goals for the next five years. Please complete the survey if you haven't done so already.

Enjoy the long weekend. On Memorial Day, remember to say a prayer for all those who gave their lives while serving in the country's armed forces.

Beannacht,

Bernadette O'Leary, Principal
