Principal's Letter

First Sunday of Lent

Dear Families,

Where did the month of February go? It is during this time of the year that I often find myself pondering the passage of time. Another academic year is well over half way complete. The auction is just around the corner - get your tickets now! While the students are entering a nice stretch of uninterrupted academic time, the administrative team is already in preparations for next year. We will begin charting out our calendar (classes begin August 31) soon. As we all skillfully juggle our children's academic, social, and spiritual calendars - not to mention our own - it is easy to get trapped in the "I'm so busy" mentality. During your personal Lenten journey, take time for yourself to reflect on the true meaning of the Easter Season. Consider, as Archbishop J. Peter Sartain challenges us in his book, A Lenten Pilgrimage, to take stock of the "emotional footprint" we are leaving in our daily interactions with co-workers, friends, and even our children. "How often do I make the world revolve around me?" he writes. Let us dedicate ourselves, and inspire in our children, the idea of cultivating peace around us and most importantly in our hearts.

Through the Rice Bowl program the students are Living Their Faith and learning about local and global social justice issues. Each year Catholic Relief Services (CRS) focuses on six countries that struggle with hunger. This week CRS features Nicaragua (link below). You will find additional resources at http://www.crsricebowl.org/ to assist your family on the Lenten journey.

Tomorrow we will have the funeral services for alumni parent Peter Flanagan. Peter was a champion of the Fair Share philosophy. Many of you may have met him while he was volunteering at our recent facilitation. Peter was an active member of St. John Parish, and had been a frequent volunteer in school and parish activities for over twenty years. He started and coached the St. John Chess Club and was active in CYO coaching. He leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Anne Marie McBroom, and two sons: Benjamin and Jonathan, who both attended St. John School. Join me in praying for the repose of Peter's soul.

Beannacht,

Bernadette O'Leary
