Be sure to bring all pledges in! We're ALMOST there!
Dear Families,
As you read this I am on retreat with all the principals of the Archdiocese of Seattle. Besides the lessons of the retreat - in this case, cultivating sacramental imagination - this time provides a wonderful opportunity to network and learn best practices from each other. We will also bid farewell to our outgoing Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Fr. Stephen Rowan and meet our new Superintendent, Dr. Patrick Haggerty. Friday evening, I will be back to meet you at the Purple and Gold Dinner! This will be a grand event at which we celebrate the current successes at St. John School and pave the way for future generations. We will be honoring Mrs. Jody Desclos. It looks like it will be a very well-attended event! Thank you, Endowment team for your contributions to this event. Your children want a free dress day, so don't forget to get your Jog-A-Thon donations in to us! We have beaten our 'laps run' record - we ran a school combined 1,012.3 miles! We are close to our dollar goal, but waiting for all of you to get your money in! The final due date is October 1. We are in the thick of soccer and cross country season. Woodland Park becomes a sea of purple at the weekend! My dog and I get plenty of exercise going from game to game and we enjoy the excitement, the sense of camaraderie and community, and watching the children develop sportsmanship and healthy habits. Go Eagles! Beannacht,
Bernadette O'Leary Principal

Virtues in Practice comes to us from the Dominican Sisters, and is a program to help children in grades Pre-Kindergarten through eight grow closer to Jesus by imitating His life and virtues. It is set up in such a way that a whole school studies the same virtue each month, to provide a whole-school (and at home, whole-family) focus. The program covers 27 virtues over a three-year cycle, with 81 saints held up as models of the virtues.Parents are encouraged to visit the website and learn as a family, augmenting the lessons children receive in the classroom. Here you will find student workbooks as well as parent guides. We will highlight the saints of the month, and the virtue in our newsletter monthly. October Virtue: Faith - Believing in God and all He has revealed. Grs. PK-2 Saint: St. Martha Grs. 3-5 Saint: St. Jerome Grs. 6-8 Saint: St. Augustine

I am sending a huge thank you to St. John Parish for the donations to the Broadview Thomson K-8 Food Program. Your Blessings in a Backpack event brought in over 480 lbs. of food (valued at $770 dollars)! Any size of donation is amazing, but it is worth noting this is close to double the donation of last year (at 250 lbs).
Since receiving your donation we have distributed, weekly, to 20 children in need across North Seattle via our program. The children and their caregivers can and do depend on the program for consistent food which gives some piece of mind in trying times.
Your donations also has the byproduct of making me feel appreciative and proud of our community and its capacity to give. Opening the pantry doors and seeing all this food feels like Christmas and Birthdays all wrapped into one. Thank you for your kindness, compassion and generosity!
Sincerely, Samantha Woogerd, Food Program Coordinator
Want to thank someone publicly? Send your "thanks" to Diane Crockett at dcrockett@stjohnsea.org for publication in NewsViews.
