Dear Families,
At Curriculum night on Tuesday, I spoke about our theme, In His Image, and I will do so again tonight. We are made in God's image, and we must try to act like Him, reflect that image. Each day, we can strive to be more mindful of how we are behaving. It is our mission. At school, we use the Habits of Mind and the activities learned through Second Step as the guidelines. You can do so at home. Develop habits like persistence, empathy, caring, impulse-management, striving for accuracy, asking questions, finding humor, and responding with wonderment and awe. Jesus had some great habits! Check Him out in the Bible!
Thank you, Middle School parents and teachers. You all turned out for Curriculum Night and going into the school year, we have a well-prepared community. I am looking forward to meeting the parents of K - 5 tonight. We will begin with a social hour, so come at 6:00 for Anniversary cake and lemonade. Volunteer parents will be on hand to tell you about Scrip, the Auction, the 90th Anniversary Dinner, Parent Association, and Uniform Exchange.
Seventh and eighth grade classes will enjoy spiritual retreats at Camp Don Bosco Tuesday, September 24, and Tuesday, September 17, respectively. We invite your prayers for these students. St. John School will celebrate our Opening of School Liturgy on Wednesday, September 18, at 9am in the Church. This is a dress uniform day for students. You are welcome to join us.
Beannacht, (blessings)

SAFETY REMINDER
Parents and students have been observed crossing Greenwood Avenue at N. 79th Street. Please - walk the extra block to the corner at 80th Street and cross with the traffic light. There is no crossing guard at N. 79th Street, and traffic is very heavy and hectic at drop off and pick up. The moment you save may cost you a lifetime!

School's back in session and that means it's a great time to turn in the Box Tops you've been collecting over the summer! Please send them with your child or drop off in the school or parish office. Remember, it's always better to send in a small bag of Box Tops frequently than to wait to fill a big bag as they do expire! Check out the Box Tops website for more ways to earn $$ for our school: Thank you! Julia Rudden, Box Tops Coordinator |
 In His Image
We received the following from a parent, illustrating how one student is bringing our school theme to life:
"Too often, we only take the time to write about others when we have a complaint. Instead, I'd like to recognize the good citizenship of St. John student Moses K.
My 6th grader, Breanna, was scheduled for her first time as the 3rd altar server during Father Crispin's vacation in August. She was nervous that she'd forget what to do as it had been a few months since she shadowed as a 4th server. I assured her that the 1st and 2nd server would be there to help her. However, Breanna was the only alter server to show up. Her fear and anxiety were visible as she carried up the cross and took her seat.
Fortunately, Moses was at mass and quickly saw that she needed help. He quietly slipped into the back, put on a robe and was seated beside her within minutes. He expertly and patiently guided her through mass, and
turned something that could have been a horrible experience for her into something positive.
After mass, Moses politely struggled off our thanks and instead complimented Breanna. We were so impressed by his graciousness and easy willingness to jump in when he saw a need. Moses K. showed himself to be the best of citizens and I believe he deserves recognition for it.
Best,
Karen Schuler"
