 St. John School's first teachers
Happy Anniversary, St. John School! Even if the weather is not cooperating, and we can't have our tailgate, we are still beginning a year-long celebration of the 90th anniversary!
St. John School opened on September 4, 1923. The Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Sister Mary Francis, Sister Mary Coronata, Sister Mary Gabriel, Sister Mary Valesia and Sister Mary Justin had 220 students. Imagine the class size! Through the efforts of the sisters, the parishioners and the founding pastor, Reverend William Quigley, the school flourished. Since then, St. John School has grown. The school has survived the decline of the women religious and the almost free Catholic education they offered, changing demographics and economic downturns and is now stronger than ever. We remain committed to academic excellence and moral development in a strong Christ-centered community. Come out to the Blessing of the Backpacks Mass and Carnival (September 15) and share that community spirit!
Tomorrow, the students will hear all about the Jog-a-Thon. They will bring home their packets and begin looking for sponsors. Those students who have three sponsors by Monday, September 9th, may wear free dress to school that day! As we already informed you, we are hoping that we can replace the magazine sale with the jog-a-thon, so we will need your support to do so. I love the jog-a-thon - I enjoy the outdoors, the healthy exercise, being with the students and the fun that it generates. You can continue to renew your magazines online and this will also benefit the school.
Next week, we have the Curriculum Nights on the 10th (Middle School) and the 12th (Grades K - 5). It is very important that you attend, as this is your opportunity to hear about the expectations and the course content for your children's classes. We will begin each meeting in Egan Hall. Following a short presentation there, you will be dismissed to your children's classrooms.
I already miss not seeing you this evening. Stay dry!
Beannacht, (blessings)

Scrip
We know you might have taken a little time off from scrip during the summer, and as Fall begins we just want to make sure you know we're here to help you get back into the swing of things! Scrip is a vital part of St. John fundraising, and the easiest for YOU to take part in. Scrip will be sold every Friday in the hallway in front of XDC from 2:45pm - 3:15pm. Please stop by and see us. Every dollar made through the scrip program goes right back into St. John. Last year we made $75,000 for the school. Let's try to beat that number this year. First Friday standing orders are coming home with students tomorrow. Please remember to check those back packs as children get in the habit of bringing the pink envelopes home. Thank you. Bites
Something happening in the non-school community you would like to let others know about? Forward your "bites" to Diane Crockett.
Looking for a new volunteer opportunity? Want to learn more about St. John women's overflow shelter? We are hosting a volunteer social Sunday, September 15, at 5pm in the Egan Hall Mezzanine. Come have a glass of wine, meet current volunteers and learn more about the women's shelter. For many years St. John Church/School has hosted homeless women from Noel House on Saturday and Sunday evenings. This rewarding ministry is sustained thanks to generous volunteers from the school, parish and neighborhood communities who help out once every month or two. Please consider giving up a Saturday or Sunday night to enable these women to feel welcomed and safe. We need more overnight volunteers! Two women volunteers meet at the mezzanine set up food welcome the guests and spend the night. Time commitment is 8pm until 6:30am. Drivers are also needed for about an hour's time commitment. Driving is a great way for the working dad to become involved in the school and parish. Contact Mary Kearney at marytkearney@comcast.net or 206 297-7072 or view our invitation on SignUp Genius. Hope to see you there!
