First Communion 2013
2013 First Communion Class

Dear Families,

Congratulations to the children who received their First Holy Communion this weekend! God's grace radiated through the community and the two masses were packed with joyous families. Fr. Crispin told the 'little angels' that he still remembers his First Communion very clearly, even the pew in which he sat. Thank you, parents, parish volunteers, and teachers for making this day so special for the children.

It's an exciting time for these young students! Tonight, Mrs. Tsagalakis and the first and second graders will present their Spring Concert. Tomorrow, the first graders are off to Tiger Mountain with their eighth grade buddies to hike and study habitats.

News from Camp Hamilton is that the sixth graders are having a wonderful time at Environmental Science Camp. When I look back on my years as sixth grade teacher, it was always the best week of the year! I am hoping to relive a few hours of the experience when I visit the students today. Our students are so fortunate! They are blessed with the sunshine, their teachers and their volunteers.

Bike Day Thank you, parents and students for your participation in Wednesday's Bike-to-School Day event. Over 110 student and parent riders participated. Sr. Pablo noted the ample street parking in the neighborhood and reduced traffic congestion during the event. We'll host another bike day on Friday, May 17.

Speaking of May 17- students will be participating in our school's first Jog-a-Thon next Friday. This event hopes to promote the practice of living a healthy lifestyle while raising funds for local and global causes. Contact Sr. Pablo is you are interested in helping with this event.

After School Studies

St. John School Extended Day Care (XDC) program is now accepting applications for the 2013/2014 school year.

Applications for After School Studies (AFS) will be available the first week of September.  After School Studies is for students in grades 6, 7, and 8 and provides study time with a certified teacher.  Help with homework is provided.  Hours are 3:15-5:15pm Mondays through Thursdays.

Summer XDC registrations are due tomorrow, May 10.  Please contact Mrs. Roach or Mrs. Overby if you are unable to meet the deadline or have questions about enrollment or the program (206-782-9915).

The Garden Committee will sell cut flowers, $1 a stem, after school on Thursday
and Friday, May 9 and 10.  Funds raised will go towards creating an outdoor classroom in the space behind the primary grade portables.  Flowers will be sold by the flag pole and at the main school entrance on the playground.  Quantities are limited.

As a part of the May Day celebrations, students have submitted ideas for the name of the new garden.  All students will be able to vote online for their favorite.  The winner will be announced at the flower sale on May 9 and 10.

Show your support for the new garden--and your mother!!

Are you interested in joining our next delegation to visit our Sister communities in Peru?

Over the last 12 years about 40 members of St. John have visited our Sister Parish in Ilave and the Orphanage and Sister School in Puno, Peru.  During Easter Holidays in 2014, our next delegation will be visiting Peru. This has been a great experience for everyone who has made the trip.  Children must be accompanied by parents.  Amigos de Peru will be holding an information session about plans for our next delegation on May 13th at 7pm in the School Library.  Please join us.

Stop and take a look at the Amigos de Peru display in the vestibule of the church.   There are pictures from our last delegation, information about Peru and CDs from the girls at the orphanage.
