Pope Francis
 Message From the Principal

Dear Families,

Yesterday, we were blessed to have our new Pope announced in the middle of the school day.  Many students watched the white smoke billow from the chimney over the Sistine Chapel and they saw Pope Francis walk onto the balcony.  Let's all keep Pope Francis I in our prayers.

The Middle School Science Fair will be held this evening in Egan Hall, beginning at 7pm.  Under Mr. Tice's tutelage students have prepared impressive demonstrations.  Do try to attend.

The Science Fair coincides with the end of the second trimester of school!  Report cards will be distributed to students next Thursday, March 21.  Please note that the PowerSchool Parent Portal will close for one week to allow teachers to make final entries beginning today.

Sr. Liz Tiernan will be with us next week, teaching the students Abraham to Jesus in 60 Minutes.  Sounds like a lot of ground  to cover in a short time!  The lesson will give students an overview of how our faith went from its beginnings to its fulfillment through Christ.

I have enjoyed sharing my Irish heritage with the students this week, telling them about St. Patrick, and reading some of our Irish legends.  I am very proud of the fact that band students will march with Bishop Blanchet High  School in the St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday.

L Fhile Pdraig Sona Daoibh!  Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Operation Rice Bowl 2012

Each year Catholic Relief Services asks families to consider Operation Rice Bowl. Operation Rice Bowl invites us to pray and fast in solidarity with those who are hungry around the world and give sacrificial donations to help those in need. Once a week, your family can eat a smaller meatless meal and donate the difference saved to Operation Rice Bowl. Students were given cardboard Rice Bowls for collecting Lenten sacrifices. These sacrifices may be turned in at the Holy Thursday service, at the Easter service, or to the school office to be forwarded to CRS.  Visit www.crsricebowl.org for additional resources to use at home such as recipes, prayers and information on some of the countries supported by CRS.

Scrip is being sold every Friday morning and afternoon in the west hallway across from XDC, through the end of the school year.  We are committed to the program and hope you are, too! Scrip is a great fundraiser for the school, second only to the auction.  You simply shop at your favorite stores and a portion of the card comes back to St. John School.

Scrip March Madness is going great.  We have sold over $80,000 so far, well on the way to our goal of $140,000.  If we hit our goal the entire school - even the teachers - get free dress.  Show your team spirit by placing an order today.

Parish
Parish Ministry Invitation
You are invited to help address the needs of the homelessness in our community. For many years St. John Parish and School have hosted homeless women from Noel House on Saturday and Sunday evenings, in Egan Mezzanine. This rewarding ministry is sustained, thanks to generous volunteers who help out once every month or two. Please consider giving a Saturday or Sunday night and help these women feel welcome and safe. We need more overnight volunteers! Two women volunteers meet at Egan Hall mezzanine to set up food, welcome the guests, and spend the night. The time commitment is 8pm until 6:30am.  No minimum obligation - volunteer once a year or once a month. Drivers are also needed (men and women). High School/Middle School female students looking for service hours are always welcome. Contact Mary Kearney at [email protected] or 206 297-7072.
