Message From the Principal

  St. Valentine

 Happy Valentine's Day!

The classrooms are filled with students sharing their appreciation of one another as they pass out cards and treats today.  St. Valentine's Day at St. John gives us an extra-special opportunity to share our Catholic values and to practice social and emotional skills.   In deepening our relationships with one another, we are deepening our relationship with Jesus, and assisting our young people to see and understand the role of our faith in our daily lives.  As you chat with your children about their day, try to bring them beyond the commercialism of Valentine's Day and help them to recognize Saint Valentine.

Our Mass for Ash Wednesday was a very inspirational opening for the season of Lent.   Fr. Crispin reminded us to remember to pray more, to sacrifice and deny ourselves those things that we love, like chocolate and video games (fast), and to share the money we would otherwise spend on the chocolate (almsgiving).  At school, we will begin and end the week in prayer with all-school Monday morning prayer in Egan Hall and the Stations of the Cross on Friday afternoons.  Today, we 'fasted' from free dress and remembered that it is Lent.  We will give 'alms' and be in solidarity with others through the Rice Bowl and other class projects.   The students will be focusing on managing their impulsivity, developing empathy and persisting throughout Lent.  These are great Habits of Mind and Heart that will help them develop self-awareness and emotional sensitivity.   How are you celebrating Lent at home?

I am very grateful to the volunteers who assisted during the State of the School and facilitation.  This huge undertaking flowed so smoothly thanks to the committed and dedicated people we have in our community.  Bless you all!

Enjoy the long weekend,

Beannacht,
